For nearly one hundred years, the moving image has been discussed primarily from the perspective of photography, by organising our questions and theories around cinema as an ocular dispositif, based on light, projection and transparency, or as a recording dispositif, based on index, imprint and trace. In the age of digital imaging technologies, some of which have little to do with optics, such a history of the moving image seems too narrowly conceived. The broadly based, if loosely defined research field of “media archaeology” not only locates cinema within more comprehensive media histories, it also investigates apparently obsolete, overlooked or poorly understood past media practices. The expectation is that by once more “opening up” these pasts, one can also enable or envisage a different future. The question then arises: is media archaeology a (viable) disciplinary subject or also a (valuable) symptom of changes in our ideas of history, causality and contingency?

The issue of surgical treatment of patients with generalized periodontitis and osteopenia is particularly topical. Numerous studies have confirmed the benefits of surgical treatment procedures using osteoplastic material to stimulate repair process of periodontal tissues. The objective of the research was to improve the effectiveness of surgical treatment of patients with generalized periodontitis and osteopenia through the combined use of osteoplastic material and antiresorptive drugs in the preoperative and postoperative periods.93 patients underwent treatment and clinical observation. The patients were divided into three groups. Group I included 20 patients who underwent surgical treatment according to conventional procedure. Group II included 25 patients who underwent surgical treatment with local application of osteoplastic material “Easy Graft”. Surgical treatment in Group III (26 patients) was conducted using osteoplastic material “Easy Graft” and antiresorptive drug “Bonviva”. Experimental group consisted of 22 apparently healthy individuals. The obtained results indicated that surgical treatment using osteoplastic material and antiresorptive drug contributes to the most significant positive effect determined according to the dynamics of densitometric values. Combined use of osteoplastic material “Easy Graft” and antiresorptive drug “Bonviva” leads to stable process stabilization being confirmed by densitometric study indices both in early and in remote postoperative period.

This article explores the topic of scientific discovery in two cases of intersections between imaging technologies and sleight-of-hand magic in the domain of nontheatrical film and media. The first case is the French psychologist Alfred Binet’s use of chronophotography to study magicians in the 1890s. The second is the reanimation of Binet’s study by cognitive (neuro)scientists beginning in the early 2000s using eye-tracking cameras and other digital-imaging devices. The author focuses on how both cases treat the magician as a medium of discovery and how both use optical devices to “see” visual processes related to the experience of wonder.

BACKGROUND: Management of bone periodontal defects, destruction, and loss of the alveolar bone is considered a challenge for modern periodontal regeneration and implant dentistry. Numerous of biomaterials are being used in periodontal regenerative treatment. AIM: This study aims to know the characteristics of biomaterials and their efficiency in periodontal surgical treatment as regenerative therapy. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature considering reviews, clinical studies, original papers, and articles from electronic data has been used. RESULTS: Different biomaterials such as Straumann® Emdogain®, Geistlich Bio-Oss®, MIS 4MATRIX – Bone Graft, Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), Mis Bone-4MATRIX, and PRF are being used for periodontal regeneration treatment, hence revealing more effective outcomes when combined. PRP together with conventional grafting procedures may be a beneficial treatment approach, guided tissue regeneration with bioabsorbable membranes in combination with Bio-Oss are stable on a long-term basis. CONCLUSION: Biomaterials being used in periodontal surgical treatment have the different regenerative ability. The combined use of biomaterials might result in a better clinical outcome. There are also a number of other biomaterials used to treat periodontal regeneration, but generally all have the same ability and the same molecular structure as highlighted in this literature review.

Introduction: The issue of surgical treatment of acute pancreatitis, in particular the choice of operative technique, is becoming increasingly relevant. The aim: To work out surgical approach in patients with acute complicated pancreatitis (ACP) using minimally invasive and traditional operative techniques. Materials and methods: 170 patients underwent surgery for ACP. The main group (109 subjects) had minimally invasive techniques (MIT) dominated, the comparative group (61 subjects) – traditional operations. Results: MIT performed “as final” in 62 (69%), “stage”– in 16 (18%) and “stabilizing patient condition” – in 12 (13%) of observations. The number of combined interventions predominated in the main group – 26% and 12% (χ2=4.002; р=0.04), traditional in comparative groups – 67% and 17% cases (χ2=40.291; р<0.0001). Primary laparotomy operations were used in 41 (67%) patients from comparative and 19 (17%) patients from the main group (χ2=40.291; р<0.0001). The extent of traditional operations in the main group consisted predominantly of necrosequestrectomy with Beger closed drainage – in 26 (55%) and 15 (31%) observations, respectively (χ2=5.018; р=0.02). Necrosequestrectomy with subsequent stage lavage performed in common purulent-necrotic lesions were comparable in both groups – in 11 (23%) and 13 (26%) observations (χ2=0.0013; р>0.05). Conclusions: The worked out surgical treatment approach in ACP with individual and combined use of MIT and traditional operations resulted in decreased rates of postoperative complications from 13.1% to 8.3% and mortality from 14.8% to 9.2%.

While microfilm has been the standard medium for manuscript photography since the 1950s, digital imaging is beginning to revolutionize manuscript research by providing broader and lower-cost access to higher-quality manuscript images. New digital imaging technologies like “multi-spectral imaging” are also capable of improving the legibility of damaged texts far beyond that achievable with conventional film. The potential of these new technologies for manuscript research may be seen with digital imaging projects focusing on such important texts as the Codex Sinaiticus and the Herculaneum papyri. For all its advantages, digital imaging poses for us further technological and archival challenges.

In the presented clinical case, we consider the surgical treatment of a 9-year-old girl with an extensive post-traumatic scalp wound in the parieto-occipital region resulting from hair getting into the moving mechanism of a go-kart car and incomplete separation of the scalp in the parieto-occipital region of the head. The early postoperative period (surgical treatment with primary wound closure) was complicated by the development of skin necrosis. An extensive wound defect in the soft tissues of the scalp (up to 150 cm2) was replaced with local related tissues. For this, various methods of plastic surgery were used in different areas of the wound defect: plastic surgery with local tissues, replacement of the defect with a rotated fascio-cutaneous flap and plastic surgery with local tissues using the dosed stretching method. The combined use of these methods made it possible to completely restore full-fledged soft tissues and hair of the injured parieto-occipital region.
