The forbidden d3Δi–X1Σ+ transition of CO has been observed in absorption at high resolution in the vacuum ultraviolet region. The intensity distribution in the rotational structure of the observed bands is in conformity with the assumption that the transition occurs on account of the interaction between the d3Δ state and a 1Π state, presumably the A1Π state. Thirteen bands of the d–X system have been analyzed yielding more extensive rotational data for the d3Δi state than were previously known. A discussion of the local perturbations in the d state by the A1Π and a3Π states is included.

AbstractTheoretical descriptions of the abundance and excitation of CO in interstellar clouds require accurate and complete information on many molecular properties. In particular, data such as line positions, line widths, and photoabsorption coefficients, which will allow the photodissociation rate for CO to be determined, are needed. We have measured some photoabsorption coefficients for CO at a resolving power more than 20 times greater that that used in previous work. Most of our results for bands between 94.0 and 100.4 nm are larger than the values of Letzelteret al.

The mass spectra of representative series of simple alkyl acetoacetates, alkyl acetothioacetates, and some unsaturated esters derived from unsaturated alcohols or phenols are reported and discussed. The fragmentation schemes have been established by high resolution measurements, appropriate metastable ions, and by deuterium and 18O labelling. Many of the spectra show significant skeletal rearrangement fragments arising from either loss of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide.

Within the study of the interaction between A and B states of As2 molecule, a high resolution analysis of 16 absorption bands with 11 ≦ υ ≦ 17 in the A ← X system has been performed. The following constants are proposed for the A state: T00 = 40145.9 cm-1, ωe = 262.7 cm-1, ωe xe = 0.48 cm-1, Be = 0.0797 cm-1, De ≅ 3 X 10-8 cm-1 , αe = 0.00031 cm-1 , re = 2.374 Å. Three new vibronic levels have been discovered in the 42 400 -44 500 cm-1 energy range, either directly or by the perturbations they induce in A levels
