19F and 119Sn nmr spectroscopy has been used to study the SnF2–MF–H2O (M = Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+, and [NH4]+) system. The nmr data have been supplemented by frozen solution 119Sn Mössbauer measurements. The evidence suggests that the dominant species in the SnF2–H2O system is a hydrated stannous fluoride, probably SnF2•H2O having Mössbauer parameters of δ = 3.46 mm s−1 and Δ = 1.70 mm s−1. When F− is added to these solutions rapid F− exchange occurs with the hydrated SnF2 and the dominant species becomes [SnF3]−. The 119Sn nmr chemical shift of [SnF3]− is ~ −700 ppm from (CH3)4Sn. The 119Sn Mössbauer parameters for frozen solutions of [SnF3]− are δ = ~ 3.1 mm s−1 Δ = 1.9 mm s−1. These spectroscopic data are cation dependent. We could find no strong evidence for high concentrations of [Sn2F5]− in any of these solutions.

In 1958 Rudolph L. Mössbauer reported his discovery of a simple, practical way of observing nuclear gamma ray resonance. One of the remarkable features of the discovery was the high precision with which energy changes can be measured: energy resolutions of one part to 1011 −1013 are possible. With this high resolution capability it is possible to measure hyperfine interactions between the nucleus of an atom and its electronic environment. These interactions affect the line shape which can be described by several experimental Mössbauer parameters. The three primary parameters are the isomer shift (δ), the quadrupole splitting (Δ), and the magnetic hyperfine interaction.The isomer shift, determined by the position of the centroid of a set of lines in a spectrum, is proportional to the electron density at the nucleus. Since only s electrons have a probability of being at the nucleus, it is possible to obtain electronic structure information such as oxidation state and population of certain molecular orbitals.The quadrupole splitting results when the electron environment surrounding the Mössbauer nucleus is not spherical in its charge distribution. Specifically, Δ is proportional to the imbalance in electron density between the axial and equatorial directions. When this hyperfine interaction is present, there is a quadrupole splitting; i.e., a single spectra line will split into two or more lines.

Abstract This review deals with studies of the variations of quadrupole splitting, electronic structure and stereochemistry of iron associated with qualitative changes of biomolecules. The possibility to determine various iron containing species resulting from the destruction of biomolecules using Mössbauer parameters is shown. A small change of iron stereochemistry leads to a small change of the iron electronic structure which could be detected by small changes of quadrupole splitting. It is expected that quadrupole splitting of iron gives new information for biomedical research on a molecular level.

In this mini-review, we consider the results of various meteorite studies using Mössbauer spectroscopy with a high velocity resolution in order to reveal the minor spectral components related to spinels such as chromite, hercynite, magnesiochromite, magnesioferrite and daubréelite in bulk meteorite matter or in some extracted phases. Spinels observation in the Mössbauer spectra is supported by characterization of the studied samples by means of optical and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. Mössbauer parameters obtained for extraterrestrial spinels are compared with those obtained for terrestrial analogs published in the literature.
