Almost ten years have passed since the first experimental attempts of enhancing functionality of radiofrequency metamaterials by embedding active circuits that mimic behavior of hypothetical negative capacitors, negative inductors and negative resistors. While negative capacitors and negative inductors can compensate for dispersive behavior of ordinary passive metamaterials and provide wide operational bandwidth, negative resistors can compensate for inherent losses. Here, the evolution of aforementioned research field, together with the most important theoretical and experimental results is reviewed. In addition, some very recent efforts that go beyond idealistic impedance negation and make use of inherent non-ideality, instability, and non-linearity of realistic devices, are highlighted. Finally, a very fundamental, but still unsolved issue of common theoretical framework that connects causality, stability, and non-linearity of networks with negative elements is stressed.

AbstractCurrent attempts to understand human-machine systems are complex and unwieldy. Multiple disciplines throw different concepts and constructs at the problem, but there is no agreed-to framework to assemble these interrelated moving parts into a coherent system. We propose interdependence as the common factor that unifies and explains these moving parts and undergirds the different terms people use to talk about them. In this chapter, we will describe a sound and practical theoretical framework based on interdependence that enables researchers to predict and explain experimental results in terms of interlocking relationships among well-defined operational principles. Our exposition is not intended to be exhaustive, but instead aims to describe the basic principles in a way that allows the gist to be grasped by a broad cross-disciplinary audience through simple illustrations.

Nowadays, scholar recommender systems often recommend academic papers based on users’ personalized retrieval demands. Typically, a recommender system analyzes the keywords typed by a user and then returns his or her preferred papers, in an efficient and economic manner. In practice, one paper often contains partial keywords that a user is interested in. Therefore, the recommender system needs to return the user a set of papers that collectively covers all the queried keywords. However, existing recommender systems only use the exact keyword matching technique for recommendation decisions, while neglecting the correlation relationships among different papers. As a consequence, it may output a set of papers from multiple disciplines that are different from the user’s real research field. In view of this shortcoming, we propose a keyword-driven and popularity-aware paper recommendation approach based on an undirected paper citation graph, named PRkeyword+pop. At last, we conduct large-scale experiments on the real-life Hep-Th dataset to further demonstrate the usefulness and feasibility of PRkeyword+pop. Experimental results prove the advantages of PRkeyword+pop in searching for a set of satisfactory papers compared with other competitive approaches.

Confidence regression is a significant research field of confidence machine learning. This paper adopts KNN algorithm as a tool, and performs error evaluation on results of regressive learning to classify the accept field and the refuse field so as to achieve the confidence regression. By setting specific error value, this approach achieves controllable confidence regression, which has been tested on experimental data of bodyfat and other data sets. The experimental results presented show the feasibility of our approach.

This paper explores the notion of a 'threshold concept' and discusses its possible implications for higher education research and practice. Using the case of introductory accounting as an illustration, it is argued that the idea of a threshold concept provides an emerging theoretical framework for a 're-view' of educational research and practice. It is argued that this re-view both demands and supports several forms of dialogue about educational research and practice: within the disciplines (between lecturers and between lecturers and students) and between lecturers and educational developers. Finally, it is suggested that, rather than representing a research field in its own right, the threshold concepts framework may act as a catalyst, drawing together a variety of fields of research in a productive educative framework.

With the development of stereo vision, much more attention has paid from two-dimensional to three-dimensional (3-D) spaces, research on 3-D image/video becomes an inevitable trend presently. We present a novel research field that focused on the enhancement of 3-D videos, using two different 3-D videos and enhancing them with histogram equalization and edge sharpening algorithms. And we utilize the subjective assessment in the experiments. The experimental results show that the edge sharpening method has better effect than the histogram equalization method in 3-D video mode. But we also find some problems that both methods have blurred edges.

In this paper, we discuss how the adoption of a particular theoretical framework affects task design in the research field of modelling and applications. With this purpose, we start by referring to the existence of different reference epistemological models about mathematical modelling to analyse better the consequences they have for decision making concerning designing modelling tasks and their implementation. In particular, we present the analysis of three case studies, which have been selected as representatives of different theoretical perspectives to modelling. We discuss the impact of the chosen reference epistemological model on the task design process of mathematical modelling and the local ecologies suited for their implementation.

When conjunctions are employed to link sentences, they become discourse relational devices The purpose of this study is to analyse if the semantic meaning of Lithuanian contrastive conjunctions o (but/when/whereas/while) and bet (but) coincides with the pragmatic meaning and to draw some parallels with their English counterparts. A corpus-based approach is employed to make generalizations on the use of Lithuanian conjunctions and their English counterparts, whereas discourse analysis provides a theoretical framework to analyse the conjunctions in spoken language and distinguish their peculiarities typical of this social context. The research reveals that Lithuanian conjunction bet and its English counterpart but demonstrate similar pragmatic behavior. On pragmatic level both conjunctions bet and but serve to object indirectly, to deny interlocutor’s ideas by first agreeing to them and then contradicting. Lithuanian conjunction o does not have a direct English counterpart. Lithuanian conjunction o, mainly contrastive in its semantic meaning, has manifold pragmatic meanings, therefore, it can be translated to English not only by but and and but also by any other English utterance introducer depending on the context. The focus of the research is spoken discourse which naturally implies certain limitations as it is not so much organized and more open to the recipient’s intervention. Knowledge of semantic meaning and pragmatic functions provides easily identifiable advice on how conjunctions could be used and translated. The object of the research is comparatively new in Lithuania and adds to the research field related to discourse relations studies.

Psychoanalysis has been a research field for authors a long time ago. The human psyche is complicated; it is a mix of emotions, instincts, actions ad reactions. The 20th century is revolutionary, new inventions and discoveries were trending, with the new way of living people started to lose faith. William Golding's Free Fall as Künstlerroman is tracing the development of the artist Sammy Mountjoy's character from childhood until he matures. The things he faced and the factors that reshaped his life. He was chastened by suffering as he learned from the school of life. In this non-thesis paper, a study of the character of Sammy as he grows up is explored with examining the factors that affected his personality. The introduction illustrates Künstlerroman as a subgenre of Bildungsroman and explains them as a theoretical framework, the difference between them and their characteristics. Also, it discusses psychoanalysis definition. Chapter I will focus on Sammy's childhood living in Rotten Row and his friends, the role of his parents and moving to the art school where he met Beatrice. Chapter II will discuss Sammy the man when he was investigated in prison. It deals with mature Sammy who wants to fix his mistakes and feels free from guilt.

Since XML could benefit data management greatly and Markov chains have an advantage in data prediction, the authors study the methodology of predicting uncertain spatiotemporal data based on XML integrated with Markov chain. To accomplish this, first, the researchers devise an uncertain spatiotemporal data model based on XML. Then, the researchers put forward the method based on Markov chains to predict spatiotemporal data, which has taken the uncertainty into consideration. Next, the researchers apply the prediction method to meteorological field. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate the advantages the authors approach. Such a method of prediction could broaden the research field of spatiotemporal data, and provide a significant reference in the study of forecasting uncertain spatiotemporal data.
