Discussion on “Effects of mechanical and aerodynamical damping on the galloping of overhead lines” and “Damping of aeolian vibration on overhead lines by vibration dampers”

Aeolian vibration often occurs in the high-voltage transmission overhead lines, and the amplitude of conductors has close relationship with conductors fretting wear. It is very difficult to measure actual amplitude of working conductor, so obtaining the amplitude of the conductor by the means of simulation is of practical significant to research quantitatively the relationship of the amplitude and the fretting wear. In this paper an imitation test-bed was built. The maximum amplitudes in the different location of a conductor in a test condition were obtained by Simulink software simulating, and the results were compared with the maximum amplitudes obtained by experimental test. The result of this comparison showed that between of them were of good similarity, and the locations of vibration nodes and maximum amplitudes were basically same. It was proved to be feasible that the aeolian vibration amplitude of the overhead conductor in kinds of conditions could be obtained by Simulink software simulating.

The Future

Overhead lines operate under all weather conditions and, consequently, are subjected to various forms of aerodynamic excitation which can cause three types of oscillation to occur, namely aeolian vibration, subconductor oscillation and full-span galloping. The meteorological conditions, associated with each type of oscillation, are described and the attendant problems discussed. Solutions which have been developed to overcome these problems are described and the relevant research work is outlined. It will be shown how this work could affect the future designs of overhead lines at existing voltage levels. Finally, the problems associated with possible multi-subconductor u.h.v. lines are considered and the influences which these problems may have on the design of such lines discussed.

Abstract In order to study the calculation method of installation distance of vibration dampers with higher precision, so as to maximize its anti-vibration performance on the conductor. The arrangement method of dampers based on the frequency response characteristics of conductors is proposed, the dynamic model of conductor considering stiffness is established. The model is solved by finite difference method, the natural frequency and vibration mode of conductor in case of Aeolian vibration are obtained, and the wavelength of conductor vibration is obtained according to its mode, so as to calculate the installation distance of vibration dampers. The calculation results of the new method are compared with those of the traditional method, which proves the advantage of the new method in calculation accuracy. The new method has a good effect on improving the calculation accuracy of the installation distance of the vibration dampers on the conductors, which is greatly influenced by its stiffness. At the same time, the frequency response of the conductor should be considered as much as possible in the calculation of the installation distance of the damper.
