Abstract The offshore wind industry is undergoing a rapid development due to its advantage over the onshore wind farm. The vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) is deemed to be potential in offshore wind energy utilization. A design of the offshore vertical axis wind turbine with a deflector is proposed and studied in this paper. Two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is employed to investigate the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine. An effective method of obtaining the blade’s angle of attack (AoA) is introduced in CFD simulation to help analyze the blade aerodynamic torque variation. The numerical simulations are validated against the measured torque and wake velocity, and the results show a good agreement with the experiment. It is found that the blade instantaneous torque is correlated with the local AoA. Among the three deflector configurations, the front deflector leads to favorable local flow for the blade, which is responsible for the improved performance.

Complex terrain can influence wind turbine wakes and wind speed profiles in a wind farm. Consequently, predicting the performance of wind turbines and energy production over complex terrain is more difficult than it is over flat terrain. In this preliminary study, an engineering wake model, that considers acceleration on a two-dimensional hill, was developed based on the momentum theory. The model consists of the wake width and wake wind speed. The equation to calculate the rotor thrust, which is calculated by the wake wind speed profiles, was also formulated. Then, a wind-tunnel test was performed in simple flow conditions in order to investigate wake development over a two-dimensional hill. After this the wake model was compared with the wind-tunnel test, and the results obtained by using the new wake model were close to the wind-tunnel test results. Using the new wake model, it was possible to estimate the wake shrinkage in an accelerating two-dimensional wind field.

A two-dimensional analysis of the performance and flowfield of the Giromill is presented. The Giromill is a vertical-axis wind turbine with straight blades that are articulated to produce maximum energy extraction from the wind. It is found that the power coefficient and windwise force coefficient for the Giromill have the same limit as obtained for the horizontal-axis wind turbine. A cross-wind force is also obtained with this type of wind turbine. The cross-wind force is of second order and decreases with tip speed. Streamlines and velocity profiles are illustrated for several loading conditions.

The aerodynamic performance and the bypass flow field of a vertical axis wind turbine under self-starting are investigated using CFD simulations in this paper. The influence of pitch angle variations on the performance of the wind turbine during self-starting is presented. A two-dimensional model of the wind turbine with three blades is employed. A commercial software FlowVision is employed in this paper, which uses dynamic Cartesian grid. The SST turbulence model is used for turbulence modeling, which assumes the flow full turbulent. Based on the comparison between the computed time-dependent variations of the rotation speed with the experimental data, the time-dependent variations of the torque are presented. The characteristics of self-starting of the wind turbine are analyzed with the pitch angle of 0o、-2oand 2o. The influence of pitch angle variations on two-dimensional unsteady viscous flow field through velocity contours is discussed in detail.
