AbstractDue to the highly competitive market and increasingly stringent environmental regulations, it is paramount to operate chemical processes at their optimal point. In a typical process, there are usually many process variables (decision variables) that need to be selected in order to achieve a set of optimal objectives for which the process will be considered to operate optimally. Because some of the objectives are often contradictory, Multi-objective optimization (MOO) can be used to find a suitable trade-off among all objectives that will satisfy the decision maker. The first step is to circumscribe a well-defined Pareto domain, corresponding to the portion of the solution domain comprised of a large number of non-dominated solutions. The second step is to rank all Pareto-optimal solutions based on some preferences of an expert of the process, this step being performed using visualization tools and/or a ranking algorithm. The last step is to implement the best solution to operate the process optimally. In this paper, after reviewing the main methods to solve MOO problems and to select the best Pareto-optimal solution, four simple MOO problems will be solved to clearly demonstrate the wealth of information on a given process that can be obtained from the MOO instead of a single aggregate objective. The four optimization case studies are the design of a PI controller, an SO2 to SO3 reactor, a distillation column and an acrolein reactor. Results of these optimization case studies show the benefit of generating and using the Pareto domain to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying relationships between the various process variables and performance objectives.

This paper isolates four parameters that guide the historical change of word classes: the quantificational parameter, the directional parameter, the preservative parameter and the temporal parameter. These parameters are involved in the organization of seven case studies in East Asian languages. Based on these case studies I define four diachronic tendencies that apply to East Asian languages and perhaps beyond: (1) the greater the size of the target word class, the lower the number of new acquired meanings; (2) if a word class engages on a path of change, then the greater its size, the more likely it is that the process of change in which it engages will be lexicalization; (3) in a typical process of grammaticalization relatively more meanings are generated than in a typical process of lexicalization; (4) processes of grammaticalization represent temporally short processes more often than processes of lexicalization.

In order to improve the efficiency of NC machining programming, and realize the rapid establishment of blank model or middle blank model, a geometrical modeling method of process driven by typical process model was put forward. This method is based on the typical process for the establishment of typical process model, to establish a mapping between modeling operation and machining process ontology, and format model mapping rules. In the process geometrical modeling of the high similarity parts, by calling the typical process model mapping rules, can generate process models automatically. A enterprise disc type parts typical process as an example is used to verify the proposed method.

Plasma Spray Physical Vapour Deposition (PS-PVD) method was designed for production of ceramic layer on nickel superalloys. In typical process before deposition the base material is heated by plasma up to 900 °C. In present article the yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was deposited on low melting point materials: 2017A-type aluminium alloy and Cu-ETP copper. The influence of power current, process time and powder feed rate on structure and thickness of obtained coatings was analysed. During first deposition process the overheating of Al-sample was observed and as result the power current was decreased to 1600 A. In the next experimental the approx. 5 mm thick dense coating was formed. During experimental processes of YSZ deposition on copper the thickness of coating increased from approx. 5 to 22 mm. The copper-oxide layer was formed under ceramic layer. The microscopic assessment showed the difficulties in formation of columnar ceramic layer on use base materials. The obtained coating was characterized by dense structure as a result of lower plasma energy during process. The increasing of power current is not possible in the case of overheating of base material.

While resumes and interviews are a part of the typical process of obtaining a job, they are not the only tools that can be used.  A career portfolio is a more complete tool.  In the portfolio, the applicant includes a resume but adds evidence of abilities, knowledge, skills, and potential.  These documents build credibility.  A student who is graduating and seeking an entry-level position would likely include documents produced during academic coursework.  Across a career, such documents would be replaced with projects completed on the job and with the permission of the employer.  It can assist the individual demonstrate qualifications in a performance evaluation or for promotion.  Thus, the career portfolio can be useful in obtaining an internship or entry-level position and throughout a career’s progression.

This work performed a comparative analysis between the construction process carried out when building the dome at the Temple of Santa Lucía, in Ambalema-Colombia and the typical process of an octagonal dome. Additionally, the structural stability is assessed of the dome of the case study against service and dynamic loads. To compare with the case study, known domes were taken as examples from structures in Italy and Spain. The analysis includes a study on the dome’s geometry and the constructive errors found. Methodology: The dome’s stability was evaluated through structural analysis software for which the dome was simplified into a system of four articulated arches. Conclusions: As a result, it was found that the dome of the temple of Santa Lucía does not have a system to counteract lateral thrusts (a drum or its similar), which permitted the appearance and widening of meridional cracks. These cracks propagate from the base to the crown, but do not compromise the structure’s stability for service loads. The analysis for seismic loads indicates that the dome is at risk of collapse upon seismic events, even of moderate magnitudes. Originality: The study is aimed at architects and engineers interested in the theme of restoration of historical structures.
