There is a growing shortage of labour within the dairy industry. To address this the industry needs to attract more people and/or reduce the labour requirements on dairy farms. Current milk harvesting techniques contribute to both the labour requirements and the current labour shortage within the industry as the process is labour-intensive and necessitates long and unsociable working hours. Automated milking systems (AMS) have been in operation, albeit on a small scale, on commercial farms in Europe for a decade and may have the potential to address labour issues within the New Zealand dairy industry. A research programme has been established (The Greenfield Project) which aims to determine the feasibility of automated milking under New Zealand dairying conditions. A Fullwoods MERLIN AMS has been installed on a protoype farmlet and is successfully milking a small herd of 41 cows. Progress from the prototype Greenfields system offers considerable potential for implementing AMS in extensive grazing systems. Keywords: automated milking systems, dairy cattle, grazing, labour

A preliminary research programme was carried out in order to study the acoustic wave reflection or target strength (TS) of tuna fish using a quantitative echo sounder (QES). The relationships between TS to fork length (FL) and swimbladder volume, for bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and yellowfin tuna (T. albacares) are investigated. The TS of bigeye tuna was about 3 dB higher than yellowfin tuna when comparing species at the same size. The result can be correlated to the swimbladder volume differencebetween species. BackgroundChildren’s use of urgent care services continues to increase. If families are to access the right services at the right time they need access to information to inform their decision making. Providing a safety net of information has the potential to reduce morbidity and avoidable mortality and has been shown to reduce re-consultation safely.AimOur research programme aims to provide parents with information they can use to help them determine when to seek help for an acutely ill child.MethodOur programme includes: ASK SARA, a systematic review of existing interventions; ASK PIP, qualitative exploration of safety netting information used by parents and professionals; ASK SID, development of the content and delivery modes for the intervention; ASK ViC, video capture of children with acute illness; and ASK Petra, safety netting tool development using consensus methodology.ResultsThe ASK SNIFF programme findings demonstrate the need for professionally endorsed and co-produced safety netting resources focussing on symptoms of acute childhood illness. We now have consensus on the scripted content for a safety netting tool supported by video materials to enable parents to see symptoms for real.ConclusionSafety netting tools are a valuable aid to general practice enabling GPs to show parents what to look out for when their child is sick so that they know when to (re)consult. Recent reports of failure to recognise and appropriately safety net children with sepsis highlights the importance of such tools.

Bottlenecks in the Implementation of On-Site Wastewater Treatment Plants on a Large Scale in The Netherlands

More than 95 % of the total housing stock in the Netherlands is connected to central sewerage systems and in most cases the wastewater is treated biologically. As connection to central sewerage systems has reached its economic limits, interest in on-site treatment of the domestic wastewater of the remaining premises is increasing. A large scale research programme into on-site wastewater treatment up to population equivalents of 200 persons has therefore been initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning and Environment. Intensive field-research work did establish that the technological features of most on-site biological treatment systems were satisfactory. A large scale implementation of these systems is however obstructed in different extents by problems of an organisational, financial and/or juridical nature and management difficulties. At present research is carried out to identify these bottlenecks and to analyse possible solutions. Some preliminary results are given which involve the following ‘bottlenecks':-legislation: absence of co-ordination and absence of a definition of ‘surface water';-absence of subsidies;-ownership: divisions in task-setting of Municipalities and Waterboards; divisions involved with cost-sharing;-inspection; operational control and maintenance; organisation of management;-discharge permits;-pollution levy;-sludge disposal. Final decisions and practical elaboration of policies towards on-site treatment will have to be formulated in a broad discussion with all the authorities and interest groups involved.
