The paper describes a procedure for automatic selection of symptoms accompanying the break in the synchronous motor armature winding coils. This procedure, called the feature selection, leads to choosing from a full set of features describing the problem, such a subset that would allow the best distinguishing between healthy and damaged states. As the features the spectra components amplitudes of the motor current signals were used. The full spectra of current signals are considered as the multidimensional feature spaces and their subspaces are tested. Particular subspaces are chosen with the aid of genetic algorithm and their goodness is tested using Mahalanobis distance measure. The algorithm searches for such a subspaces for which this distance is the greatest. The algorithm is very efficient and, as it was confirmed by research, leads to good results. The proposed technique is successfully applied in many other fields of science and technology, including medical diagnostics.

In recent decades, the genetic algorithm (GA) has been extensively used in the design optimization of electromagnetic devices. Despite the great merits possessed by the GA, its processing procedure is highly time-consuming. On the contrary, the widely applied Taguchi optimization method is faster with comparable effectiveness in certain optimization problems. This study explores the abilities of both methods within the optimization of a permanent magnet coupling, where the optimization objectives are the minimization of coupling volume and maximization of transmitted torque. The optimal geometry of the coupling and the obtained characteristics achieved by both methods are nearly identical. The magnetic torque density is enhanced by more than 20%, while the volume is reduced by 17%. Yet, the Taguchi method is found to be more time-efficient and effective within the considered optimization problem. Thanks to the additive manufacturing techniques, the initial design and the sophisticated geometry of the Taguchi optimal designs are precisely fabricated. The performances of the coupling designs are validated using an experimental setup.

Compressed air free from traces of water vapour is vital in many applications in an industrial sector. This study focuses on parametric optimization of a pressure-based packed bed adsorption system for air dehumidification through the Taguchi method and Genetic Algorithm. The effect of operational parameters, namely absolute feed air pressure, feed air linear velocity, and purge air flow rate percent on adsorption uptake rate of molecular sieve 13X-water pair, are studied based on L25 orthogonal array. From the analysis of variance, it has been found that absolute feed air pressure and purge air flow rate percent were the parameters making significant improvement in the adsorption uptake rate. A correlation representing the process was developed using regression analysis. The optimum adsorption conditions were obtained through the Taguchi method and genetic algorithm and verified through the confirmation experiments. This system can be recommended for the industrial and domestic applications that require product air with the dew point temperature below 0°C.
