Abstract A new approach to the problem of coordination sequences of periodic structures is proposed. It is based on the concept of layer-by-layer growth and on the study of geodesics in periodic graphs. We represent coordination numbers as sums of so called sector coordination numbers arising from the growth polygon of the graph. In each sector we obtain a canonical form of the geodesic chains and reduce the calculation of the sector coordination numbers to solution of the linear Diophantine equations. The approach is illustrated by the example of the 2-homogeneous kra graph. We obtain three alternative descriptions of the coordination sequences: explicit formulas, generating functions and recurrent relations.

Methods evolved from the study of wave propagation through geometrically periodic media are used to enhance the probabilistic models used in statistical energy analysis (SEA). These enhanced models are based on calculations of the pass bands of typical elements of periodic structures and allow SEA to reflect the highly non-uniform distribution of natural frequencies found in such structures. Moreover, the enhancements do not require substantial reworking of the principal results of SEA, nor do they involve major exercises in computing. They also cater for the important case of structures that deviate from pure periodicity. By way of example the flow of energy between two parts of a ship’s structure is investigated. These investigations contrast the results obtained from an ‘exact’ modal analysis of the structure, normal SEA approaches and that now proposed. The new approach is shown to provide worthwhile improvements in energy flow predictions when compared to traditional SEA. These improvements are applicable to a wide variety of geometrically periodic structures, ranging from off-shore platforms through box girder bridges to satellites.

A new study of right-handed and composite right/left-handed metamaterial transmission lines (TL) using their equivalent circuits and a new approach of the wave concept iterative process method is presented. This approach has the advantage of simulating all the periodic structures by only simulating one basic cell thanks to the surrounding periodic walls. A suitable choice of the cell length is necessary to work with the current as well as voltage and to approach the real behavior of the TL. The simulation results of these circuits, such as the calculation of current, voltage and the parameters S, helped to validate all the theoretical study.

This research paper deals with a innovative way to simplify the design of beam-forming networks (BFNs) for multibeam steerable antenna arrays based on coherently radiating periodic structures (CORPS) technology using the noniterative matrix pencil method (MPM). This design approach is based on the application of the MPM to linear arrays fed by CORPS-BFN configurations to further reduce the complexity of the beam-forming network. Two 2-beam design configurations of CORPS-BFN for a steerable linear array are analyzed and compared using this compressive method. Simulation results show the effectiveness and advantages of applying the MPM on BFNs based on CORPS exploiting the nonuniformity of the antenna elements. Furthermore, final results show that the integration of CORPS-BFN and MPM reduces the entire antenna system including the antenna array and the beam-forming network subsystem resulting in a substantial simplification in such systems.

AbstractA widely used tool in studying quasi-monoperiodic processes is the O–C diagram. This paper deals with the application of this diagram in minor planet studies. The main difference between our approach and the classical O–C diagram is that we transform the epoch (=time) dependence into the geocentric longitude domain. We outline a rotation modelling using this modified O–C and illustrate the abilities with detailed error analysis. The primary assumption, that the monotonity and the shape of this diagram is (almost) independent of the geometry of the asteroids is discussed and tested. The monotonity enables an unambiguous distinction between the prograde and retrograde rotation, thus the four-fold (or in some cases the two-fold) ambiguities can be avoided. This turned out to be the main advantage of the O–C examination. As an extension to the theoretical work, we present some preliminary results on 1727 Mette based on new CCD observations.
