Abstract The massive deployment of distributed generators from renewable sources in recent years has led to a fundamental paradigm change in terms of planning and operation of the electric power system. The usage of advanced automation and information and communication technology is a key element to handle these new challenges and to turn the traditional power system into a smart grid. The implementation of such complex systems solutions is associated with increasing development complexity resulting in increased engineering costs. The traditional engineering methods used for power system automation were not intended to be used for applications of this scale and complexity. However, the usage of proper methods, automation architectures, and corresponding tools holds huge optimization potential for the engineering process. Therefore, this work presents a model-based engineering and validation support system, covering the overall engineering process for smart grid applications.

The increasing penetration of distributed generators may harm power system and its control and operations. The microgrid offers a better solution for the issues in grid operation. Undergraduate electrical engineering and postgraduate power system and power electronics students need to understand the working of microgrid with renewable energy resources along with the optimization and scheduling of power quality custom power devices. To cater better understanding of the microgrid with renewable resources, wind, solar, distributed generators, distributed energy storage devices, DSTATCOM, and plug-in electric vehicle charging load are included in this work presented. In this paper, multiobjective optimization for the operation of microgrid to account for uncertainties in a stochastic energy resources management system is considered. Nonlinear constraint optimization to reduce the running cost, losses, and voltage variations is focused for the optimization. Loss sensitivity analysis is used to find the location wind, solar, distributed generators, distributed energy storage devices, and DSTATCOM. Firefly algorithm is used to optimize the size of distributed generators and DSTATCOM. Optimization reduced the loss, power taken from the grid and improves the voltages in the system. This paper is self-explanatory to the undergraduate and postgraduate students to understand the power flow analysis of microgrid with hybrid renewable energies and optimization technique.

Failure of power system components cause undue interruptions to Power Supply thereby affecting the Overall System reliability. Consequently, Power system reliability assessment is important for high-quality and continuous power delivery to consumers. This chapter presents the reliability assessment of Mofor Injection Substation. The performance evaluation of Mofor Injection Substation is evaluated using various system parameters which regulate the operation of the Substation. Statistical data from January, 2017 to December, 2017 were used to analyze the Substation. The results gave a power availability index (ASAI) of 0.7683796 and 0.768968 for Ekete and Orhuworun substation, respectively, due to the unavailability of strategically placed distributed generators (DGs). The aforementioned reliability result revealed that the power distribution at Mofor Injection Substation can be said to be unreliable, inefficient, undesirable, and Unstable.
