Purpose In recent times, the idea of taking advantage of the benefits of simulation techniques and Six Sigma discipline altogether has led various organizations towards implementation of simulation tools within Six Sigma methodology. The purpose of this study is to provide a more comprehensive literature review on the topic exploring how this amalgamation could work both in theory and practice. This precisely entailed finding dependable studies that shows how Six Sigma (DMAIC) Methodology can be enhanced by the three prevalent simulation techniques; Agent-Based (AB), Discrete-Events (DE), System Dynamics (SD). Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review was considered more fitting in research because it involves rigorous and well-defined approach compared to other forms of literature review. In this case, the literature was comprehensive, well-encompassing and involved finding Six Sigma and Simulations literatures from reputable scholarly databases. The outcome of these reviews was the identification of a set of key finding compiled and classified by topics. The study follows an inductive approach and utilises a meta-synthesis review technique. Findings As numerous studies assert, simulation techniques including AB, DE and SD are applicable tools in almost every stage of DMAIC, especially the Analyse, Improve and Control phases, because of their capability to test and identify potential bottlenecks and improvement areas. Findings show that the simulation tools such as CLDs, Group Model Building, Dynamic Balance Scorecards and Cost of poor quality all have the potential to add value to a Six Sigma methodology. Originality/value The findings of this study highlight the importance of further inquiry in this area of study. The finding of this study suggests that although the study on the integration of Six Sigma and simulations is increasing, empirical evidence on its effectiveness is still limited. Therefore, this study suggests more roadmaps and investigations aimed at merging Six Sigma methodology and various simulation technique. Moreover, studies that centre on hybrid or multi-method simulations within Six Sigma are also urgently necessitated.

Reliability data are generated in the form of success/failure. An attempt was made to model such type of data using binomial distribution in the Bayesian paradigm. For fitting the Bayesian model both analytic and simulation techniques are used. Laplace approximation was implemented for approximating posterior densities of the model parameters. Parallel simulation tools were implemented with an extensive use of R and JAGS. R and JAGS code are developed and provided. Real data sets are used for the purpose of illustration.

Unlike land based transportation/industry, ships sail in mid-ocean with very little or no access to external helps and supports to deal with fire accident on board. Fire is a significant threat to safety of ship, lives of the personnel onboard and cargo she carries. Fire on ships can also cause heavy damage to the marine environment. In case of fire initiation if the containment of fire is not efficient then it will not provide adequate time to make use of internal appliances or any possible external support to extinguish fire and result in a severe damage. So, it is important to predict the growth of fire and associated smoke propagation for all possible types and sources of fire. The prediction of fire growth and smoke propagation may be achieved by exercising simulation techniques. The provision of the prevention of fire propagation as prescribed in the presently applicable rules and regulations need investigation from the first principle. Also, the present rules are not explicit about the fire scenarios which have or have not been considered in the development of the rules. For the analysis of fire growth and smoke propagation in order to develop efficient evacuation process onboard a ship, there is a need to study the scenarios with the help of fire simulation techniques. As an ongoing research work, in this paper, the applicability of fire modeling techniques — Field Modeling and Zone Modeling, are investigated and a comparative study is made between both the techniques. The results are explained wherever necessary and future scope of the work is identified. An attempt has been made to define the accuracy level needed for fire simulation tools, considering present state of the art and limitations.

This paper presents a development of Electromagnetic simulation tool for design of rectangular waveguide filter using inductive-capacitive resonant iris circuit. The simulation is designed and developed by using the electromagnetic wave propagation and iterative method to calculate the amplitude of waves in the frequency and spatial domain. The developed EM simulation, called WCD (Waveguide Circuit Design) consists of menu, designed, calculating and displayed windows which were designed by using GUI (Graphic User Interface) of MATLAB® software. In this paper, the resonant iris circuit in the waveguide are simulated and compared to the CST Microwave Studio®. The simulated results present correctly the circuit properties and electric and current distribution on the waveguide iris circuit. The results agree with theory, CST simulation.

Abstract The power generated by solar photovoltaic (PV) module depends on the surrounding irradiance and temperature. This paper presents a hybrid Matlab™/Pspice™ simulation model of PV system, combined with Cadence software SLPS. The hybridization is performed in order to gain the advantages of both simulation tools such as accuracy and efficiency in both Pspice electronic circuit and Matlab™ mathematical modelling respectively. For this purpose, the PV panel and the boost converter are developed using Pspice™ and hybridized with the mathematical Matlab™ model of maximum power point method controller (MPPT) through SLPS. The main objective is verify the significance of using the proposed hybrid simulation techniques in comparing the different MPPT algorithms such as the perturbation and observation (P&O), incremental of conductance (Inc-Cond) and counter reaction voltage using pilot cell (Pilot-Cell). Various simulations are performed under different atmospheric conditions in order to evaluate the dynamic behaviour for the system under study in terms of stability, efficiency and rapidity.

Small-scale fading strongly affects the performance of a radio link; therefore radio channel simulation tools and models are broadly being used in order to evaluate the impact of fading. Furthermore, channel simulation tools and models are considered to be of utmost importance for efficient design and development of new products and services for Next Generation (Wireless) Networks (NGNs and NGWNs). In this chapter, a brief description of the most popular and broadly accepted mobile radio channel models and simulation techniques is given, mainly with respect to small-scale fading. In addition, certain research results on radio channel simulation are presented. The authors hope that the information provided herein will help researchers to acquire an insight to small-scale fading simulation techniques, which will be useful for a solid understanding of the underlying physical layer properties of NGWNs.
