This article describes the development of a culturally responsive speech and language program for the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community (CTGR) of Oregon. The historical context that served as a foundation for the speech and language program is first discussed. Next, a description of what constitutes a culturally-based program is presented. The specific culturally responsive attributes of the CTGR program are then elucidated followed by recommendations for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) desiring to create Tribal speech and language programs. In addition, insights presented in the article can provide guidance, more generally, for SLPs who currently serve Tribal communities through existing programs.

Paid speech aides and volunteers were trained to supplement and expand services provided by speech and language specialists. The project, undertaken by the Los Angeles Unified School District, was designed to train aides to provide remedial instruction aimed at increasing the articulation skills and language levels of pupils with articulatory disorders and at preventing speech problems in younger children through providing them with speech and language learning experiences. This article details the qualifications for selection of the aides, the duties they performed, and the preservice training program implemented prior to their assignment to the schools. Postinstruction data revealed that the supportive personnel successfully expanded and supplemented the services of the speech and language specialists, providing a valuable contribution to the speech and language program.

The four groups, lower socioeconomic black and white and middle socioeconomic black and white, were divided equally by sex. The biracial clinical setting was shown to influence test scores in black preschool-age children.
