The activity of bilirubin UDP-glucuronyltransferase in liver tissue was increased 1.5-fold after 90 min of secretion administration (4 i.u./h per kg body wt.) in anaesthetized Wistar rats biopsied half-hourly over a period of 2 h. In unanaesthetized R/A Wistar rats, activities of liver enzymes were assayed after administration secretin for 1 h. Bilirubin UDP-glycosyltransferase activities and cytochrome P-450 concentration were increased, but p-nitrophenol UDP-glucuronyltransferase and UDP-glucose dehydrogenase activities remained unchanged.

Background and aims: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of 2 months of endurance training (ET) along with ginger consumption on the serum levels of liver enzymes (ALT and AST), enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase, and malondialdehyde (MDA) in liver tissue in male Wistar rats. Material and Methods: 40 adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups according to the weight as follows: control (n=8), sham (n=8), ET (n=8), ginger (n=8), and ET + ginger (n=8). The training protocol was an ET program on a treadmill for two months (5 days a week). Besides standard water and food, in groups using the supplement, 100 mg of ginger solution per kg body weight of the rats was injected three days a week. Then, 48 hours after the last training session and after 8 hours of fasting, blood and tissue samples were collected over night and the serum levels of liver enzymes (ALT and AST), MDA level of the liver tissue, and activity of the liver superoxide dismutase (SOD) were measured. One-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test were used for data analysis. Results: The results showed that after 8 weeks, the activity of liver SOD in ET group (131.7±18.6, P=0.001) and ET + Ginger group (130.2±31.3, P=0.001) significantly increased in comparison with the control group (83.8±14.9). Moreover, liver MDA levels in the ET group (0.38±0.08, P=0.008) and ET + Ginger group (0.37±0.09, P=0.013) significantly increased in comparison with the control group (0.25.0±03). However, 8 weeks of ET coupled with ginger consumption had no effects on the serum levels of AST and ALT (P>0.05). Furthermore, ginger had no effect on MDA level and enzymatic activity of SOD (P>0.05). Conclusion: This study does not support the protective effects of ginger on the reduction of liver enzymes levels and improvement of the antioxidant status

<p>Teratogenic effect of herbicide glyphosate-Roundup, sold under the name Glifotox on Wistar rats was evaluated. The biological material was treated intraperitoneally with glyphosate at concentrations of 100, 125, and 150 mg/kg from gestation day nine. Hysterectomy was performed on day 18 of gestation, and the uterine horns where the embryos were located, in addition to recording the percentage of malformed embryos by modifying the method of Wilson were observed. The liver was removed and quantified by spectrophotometry with transaminase activity showed higher concentrations malformation rate and higher enzyme activity was 125 mg/kg, below is the average of 100 mg/kg and higher concentrations such as 150 mg/kg a large number of resorptions was obtained. It is concluded that glyphosate is toxic affecting the liver and liver enzymes involved in the formation of amino acids also produce delay in embryonic development.</p>

Chronic hepatitises of various etiologies are widespread liver diseases in humans. Their final stage, liver cirrhosis (LC), is considered to be one of the main causes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). About 80–90% of all HCC cases develop in LC patients, which suggests that cirrhotic conditions play a crucial role in the process of hepatocarcinogenesis. Carbohydrate metabolism in LC undergoes profound disturbances characterized by altered glycogen metabolism. Unfortunately, data on the glycogen content in LC are few and contradictory. In this study, the material was obtained from liver biopsies of patients with LC of viral and alcohol etiology and from the liver tissue of rats with CCl4-induced LC. The activity of glycogen phosphorylase (GP), glycogen synthase (GS), and glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) was investigated in human and rat liver tissue by biochemical methods. Total glycogen and its labile and stable fractions were measured in isolated individual hepatocytes, using the cytofluorometry technique of PAS reaction in situ. The development of LC in human and rat liver was accompanied by an increase in fibrous tissue (20- and 8.8-fold), an increase in the dry mass of hepatocytes (by 25.6% and 23.7%), and a decrease in the number of hepatocytes (by 50% and 28%), respectively. The rearrangement of the liver parenchyma was combined with changes in glycogen metabolism. The present study showed a significant increase in the glycogen content in the hepatocytes of the human and the rat cirrhotic liver, by 255% and 210%, respectively. An increased glycogen content in cells of the cirrhotic liver can be explained by a decrease in glycogenolysis due to a decreased activity of G6Pase and GP.
