1. When yeast oxidizes ethanol at different pH values the uptake of K+ corresponds closely to the amount of acetate accumulated at each pH value. 2. The addition of semicarbazide to the suspension buffered at pH4.75 inhibited both the K+ uptake and the acetate accumulation by about 50%. 3. The addition of either acetate or propionate to the suspensions markedly increased the K+ uptake. 4. The addition of acetate to the suspensions lowered the intracellular pH of the yeast from a resting value of pH5.80 to 5.56. 5. The ratio of the initial rate of K+ uptake to O2 consumption was 0.77. This ratio was increased to 1.77 in the presence of 10mmol of propionate/l.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of in vivo 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) for monitoring changes in growth-related phosphate metabolite concentration and intracellular pH value in rabbit thigh muscle implanted with VX-2 carcinoma. The time-course magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and in vivo 31P MRS were examined weekly in the course of 10 weeks following the onset of a VX-2 carcinoma implantation. The spectra were quantitatively analyzed to obtain vital information on the time course variation of the phosphorus metabolites and intracellular pH value according to the tumor growth. Elevation in the concentrations of phosphormonoesters (PME), inorganic phosphate (Pi), and phosphodiesters (PDE) was observed over the time course of 3-4 weeks after the implantation of VX2 carcinoma, while the rest of the metabolites, PCr and ATP tended to be constant. The concentration changes of PME, Pi, and PDE were positively correlated with the volumes of tumor necrosis. The intracellular pH values decreased with the time course of tumor growth and the volumes of tumor necrosis. In vivo 31P MRS is capable of non-invasive monitoring of intracellular pH values as well as the concentration changes of phosphate metabolites during tumor growth.

The bonding of wood with assembly adhesives is crucial for manufacturing wood composites, such as solid wood panels, glulam, furniture parts, and sport and musical instruments. This work investigates 13 hardwoods—bangkirai, beech, black locust, bubinga, ipé, iroko, maçaranduba, meranti, oak, palisander, sapelli, wengé and zebrano—and analyzes the impact of their selected structural and physical characteristics (e.g., the density, cold water extract, pH value, roughness, and wettability) on the adhesion strength with the polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesive Multibond SK8. The adhesion strength of the bonded hardwoods, determined by the standard EN 205, ranged in the dry state from 9.5 MPa to 17.2 MPa, from 0.6 MPa to 2.6 MPa in the wet state, and from 8.5 MPa to 19.2 MPa in the reconditioned state. The adhesion strength in the dry state of the bonded hardwoods was not influenced by their cold water extracts, pH values, or roughness parallel with the grain. On the contrary, the adhesion strength was significantly with positive tendency influenced by their higher densities, lower roughness parameters perpendicular to the grain, and lower water contact angles.
