Two bipolar host containing bipyridine and bicarbazole exhibited rapid and balanced charge transportation, which resulting the extremely low turn-on voltages of 2.3 and 2.4 V, respectively, and the high efficiency of 23.7% and 52.6 lm W−1.

By gradually increasing the n/p molar ratio to 2 : 1, the obtained bipolar host material exhibits a turn-on voltage of 2.6 V and an efficiency of 48.1 lm W−1, which is the lowest turn-on voltage and one of the highest power efficiencies ever reported for FIrpic devices containing a single host.

Non-doped organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using pyrene-based AIE luminogens as emitters displayed sky-blue light at 492 nm at a low turn-on voltage (3.1 V) with a maximum luminance of 15 750 cd m−2 and a current efficiency of 7.34 cd A−1 with a low efficiency roll-off.
