Abstract Achieving active and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid media based on single-atom catalysts is highly promising for cost-effective and sustainable energy supply in proton electrolyte membrane electrolyzers. Here, we report an atomically dispersed Ru1-N4 site anchored on nitrogen-carbon support (Ru-N-C) as an efficient and durable electrocatalyst for acidic OER. The single-atom Ru-N-C catalyst delivers an exceptionally intrinsic activity, reaching a mass activity as high as 3571 A gmetal−1 and turnover frequency of 3348 O2 h−1 with a low overpotential of 267 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. The catalyst shows no evident deactivation or decomposition after 30-hour operation in acidic environment. Operando synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy identify the dynamic adsorption of single oxygen atom on Ru site under working potentials, and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the O-Ru1-N4 site is responsible for the high OER activity and stability.

A hydrogen economy is necessary to meet the social demands for less consumption of fossil fuels and it has several barriers that need to be addressed if this technology is to become cost effective. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of these barriers and catalysts based on nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOx) are believed to be promising for alkaline OER. We report results of iron doping for NiOx, we synthesized by electrodeposition, combinations of iron in Ni Watts solution to develop Fe- NiOx catalysts. The best sample has an overpotential of 254 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , this result is competitive to the best results found for alkaline OER. Our methodology consists of: linear and cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic stability and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as electrochemical techniques. In addition, physical catalyst characterization techniques include: scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and surface elemental analysis by wet chemistry.<br>

The importance of advanced energy-conversion devices such as water electrolysis has manifested dramatically over the past few decades because it is the current mainstay for the generation of green energy. Anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting is one of the biggest obstacles because of its extremely high kinetic barrier. Conventional OER catalysts are mainly noble-metal oxides represented by IrO2 and RuO2, but these compounds tend to have poor sustainability. The attention on Prussian blue (PB) and its analogs (PBA) in the field of energy conversion systems was concentrated on their open-framework structure, as well as its varied composition comprised of Earth-abundant elements. The unique electronic structure of PBA enables its promising catalytic potential, and it can also be converted into many other talented compounds or structures as a precursor. This undoubtedly provides a new approach for the design of green OER catalysts. This article reviews the recent progress of the application of PBA and its derivatives in OER based on in-depth studies of characterization techniques. The structural design, synthetic strategy, and enhanced electrochemical properties are summarized to provide an outlook for its application in the field of OER. Moreover, due to the similarity of the reaction process of photo-driven electrolysis of water and the former one, the application of PBA in photoelectrolysis is also discussed.
