Polymeric nanocomposite films from PEDOT and MEH-PPV embedded with surface modified TiO2nanoparticles for the hole transport layer and emission layer were prepared, respectively, for organic emitting diodes (OLEDs). The composite of MEH-PPV+nc-TiO2was used for organic solar cells (OSCs). The characterization of these nanocomposites and devices showed that electrical (I-Vcharacteristics) and spectroscopic (photoluminescent) properties of conjugate polymers were enhanced by the incorporation of nc-TiO2in the polymers. The organic light emitting diodes made from the nanocomposite films would exhibit a larger photonic efficiency and a longer lasting life. For the organic solar cells made from MEH-PPV+nc-TiO2composite, a fill factor reached a value of about 0.34. Under illumination by light with a power density of 50 mW/cm2, the photoelectrical conversion efficiency was about 0.15% corresponding to an open circuit voltageVoc= 0.126 V and a shortcut circuit current densityJsc= 1.18 mA/cm2.

Under illumination of light with a power density of 50 mW/cm2, the photoelectrical conversion efficiency (PEC) was found to be of 0.15% corresponding to an open circuit voltage VOC = 1.15 V and a short-cut circuit current density JSC = 0.125 mA/cm2.

A series of D–π–A diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based small molecules have been designed for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic solar cells (OSCs) applications. Appling the PBE0/6-31G(d,p) method, the ground state geometry and relevant electronic properties were investigated. The first excited singlet state geometry and the absorption and fluorescent spectra were simulated at the TD-PBE0/6-31G(d,p) level. The calculated results reveal that the photophysical properties are affected through the introduction of different end groups. Furthermore, the electronic transitions corresponding to absorption and emission exhibit intramolecular charge transfer feature. It was disclosed that the designed molecules act not only as luminescent for OLEDs, but also donor materials in OSCs. Moreover, they also can be used as potential electron transfer materials using for OLEDs and OSCs.

Abstract Organic electronics has developed rapidly over the past 40 years. In 1977, a seminal discovery was reported that showed that a polymer known as polyacetylene could conduct electricity as well as metals could. This was a groundbreaking discovery that led to a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2000. The polymers that are used in organic electronics have now been widely studied for use in organic solar cells (OSCs), organic field effect transistors (OFETs), printable electronics, flexible electronics, antistatic coatings, actuators, and more recently in bioelectronics. In particular, the utility of organic electronics is seen in the commercial success of using organic electronic materials in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) where OLED displays can be seen in mobile phones and as flat panel displays. In this paper, we provide a tutorial targeting upper secondary students describing how these special classes of polymers function, and how they can be synthesized. The paper further discusses the use of these materials in two applications: organic solar cells and organic light-emitting diodes. The paper ends with a brief discussion about hands-on activities that can be carried out in the upper secondary student science classroom.
