AbstractThe development of two-dimensional (2D) monoelemental nanomaterials (Xenes) for biomedical applications has generated intensive interest over these years. In this paper, the biomedical applications using Xene-based 2D nanomaterials formed by group VA (e.g., BP, As, Sb, Bi) and VIA (e.g., Se, Te) are elaborated. These 2D Xene-based theranostic nanoplatforms confer some advantages over conventional nanoparticle-based systems, including better photothermal conversion, excellent electrical conductivity, and large surface area. Their versatile and remarkable features allow their implementation for bioimaging and theranostic purposes. This concise review is focused on the current developments in 2D Xenes formed by Group VA and VIA, covering the synthetic methods and various biomedical applications. Lastly, the challenges and future perspectives of 2D Xenes are provided to help us better exploit their excellent performance and use them in practice.

Recent advancement of two dimensional MXene nanomaterial offers promise in gases and biosensor areas owing to its large surface area, high thermal conductivity, remarkable safety and excellent catalytic activity traits. The current chapter aimed to review the fundamental and technological aspects of MXenes, including myriad synthesis techniques and structural as well as electronic characteristics of these compounds. The features elucidated in the subsequent sections, examined by both theoretical and experimental approaches and potentialities of MXenes in the gas removal and biosensor applications. Several challenges and exciting future opportunities of this research platform are lastly summarized.

Anchoring nanoscale building blocks, regardless of their shape, into specific arrangements on surfaces presents a significant challenge for the fabrication of next-generation chip-based nanophotonic devices. Current methods to prepare nanocrystal arrays lack the precision, generalizability, and postsynthetic robustness required for the fabrication of device-quality, nanocrystal-based metamaterials [Q. Y. Lin et al. Nano Lett. 15, 4699–4703 (2015); V. Flauraud et al., Nat. Nanotechnol. 12, 73–80 (2017)]. To address this challenge, we have developed a synthetic strategy to precisely arrange any anisotropic colloidal nanoparticle onto a substrate using a shallow-template-assisted, DNA-mediated assembly approach. We show that anisotropic nanoparticles of virtually any shape can be anchored onto surfaces in any desired arrangement, with precise positional and orientational control. Importantly, the technique allows nanoparticles to be patterned over a large surface area, with interparticle distances as small as 4 nm, providing the opportunity to exploit light–matter interactions in an unprecedented manner. As a proof-of-concept, we have synthesized a nanocrystal-based, dynamically tunable metasurface (an anomalous reflector), demonstrating the potential of this nanoparticle-based metamaterial synthesis platform.

An experimental technique is presented for fabricating large surface area semitransparent monocrystalline Si solar cells. The semitransparency is achieved by laser-cutting two-dimensional periodic lattices of ellipses through industrially manufactured Si cells. A novel two-level metal base was invented for minimizing cell breakages during laser cutting. The periodic lattices consist of a large number of ellipses, so as to achieve uniform distribution of the transmitted solar radiation. High efficiencies over 13% are deduced from the I–V curves, recorded under physical sunlight, for all fabricated cells with a 5% transparency.
