For improving bending toughness and fatigue performance of brittle cement-based composites, two types of water-soluble polymers (such as dispersible latex powder and polyvinyl alcohol powder) and waste tire-rubber powders are added to concrete as admixtures. Multiscale toughening mechanisms of these additions in concretes were comprehensively investigated. Four-point bending fatigue performance of four series concretes is conducted under a stress level of 0.70. The results show that the effects of dispersible latex powder on bending toughness and fatigue life of concrete are better than those of polyvinyl alcohol powder. Furthermore, the bending fatigue lives of concrete simultaneously containing polymers and waste rubber powders are larger than those of concrete with only one type of admixtures. The multiscale physics-chemical mechanisms show that high bonding effect and high elastic modulus of polymer films as well as good elastic property and crack-resistance of waste tire-rubber powders are beneficial for improving bending toughness and fatigue life of cementitious composites.

Abstract Electrospun polyvinyl alcohol and Tragacanth Gum were used to develop nanofibrous scaffolds containing poorly water-soluble beta-sitosterol. Different Concentration and Ratio of Polymeric composite: (10%) of β-S concentration in (PVA) 8 %, (TG) 0.5%, and 1% respectively were added, prepared and electrospun. The methods have included four parameters (Solution concentration, feeding rate, voltage, and distance of the collector to the tip of the needle) for designing and compared the nanofibers' average diameters. The nanofibers collected were identified via SEM, FTIR, and XRD measurements. A contact angle measurement described the hydrophilicity of the scaffold. MTT test was assessed for obtained nanofibers by using L929 normal fibroblast cells. The %age of mechanical strength, porosity, and deterioration of the scaffolds was well discussed. The average nanofibre ranged from 63 ± 20 nm to 97 ± 46 nm in diameters. The nanofibers loaded with β-S were freely soluble in water and displayed a short release lag time. The dissolution was related to an immediate dissolution, submicron-level recrystallization of β-S with sufficient conditions for nanofibers for L929 cell culture that could be used in biomedical applications. It concluded that electrospinning is a promising technique for poorly water-soluble β-S formulations that could be used in biomedical applications.

A new type of nano-composite film was prepared from polyvinyl alcohol, Ni2+-montmorillonite (Ni2+-MMT), defoamer, a levelling agent and a plasticizer. Its thermal characteristics were studied by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The intermolecular interactions were measured by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (%E) were measured. The microstructures were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). FT-IR and XPS spectra indicated that cross-linking has taken place between PVA and Ni2+-MMT. XRD and AFM indicate that the PVA molecules had inserted themselves into the silicate layers of MMT, exfoliating them and dispersing them randomly into the PVA matrix. Compared to pure PVA film, the TS of the films was increased and %E decreased when the Ni2+-Montmorillonite was added and the dissolution temperature of the film was also reduced.

To satisfy the requirement of haptic sensibility in rubber such as in the proposed hybrid skin (H-Skin), the authors have demonstrated a new method for solidifying rubber using electrolytic polymerization together with configured magnetic clusters of magnetic compound fluid (MCF) incorporated into the rubber by the application of a magnetic field. However, the rubber and magnetic fluid (MF) involved in the MCF rubber were water-soluble. In addition, the authors have demonstrated the practicability of using electrolytic polymerization with an emulsifier, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), in which natural rubber (NR) or chloroprene rubber (CR) and silicone rubber (Q) can be mixed as water-soluble and water-insoluble rubbers, respectively. In this study, to enhance production, the feasibility of solidifying rubber by electrolytic polymerization is verified using varied water-insoluble rubber, varied water-insoluble MF, and varied surfactants to aid emulsion polymerization, except in the case of other kinds of rubber and MF which have been demonstrated until recent by the authors. Based on these diverse constituents, the authors propose a consummate fabrication process for multi-layered MCF rubber, which involves porous stocking-like rubber that can be permeated by any liquid. The investigation of this application is presented in the sequential second report.
