Core/shell MnSe/MnS nanocrystals with the B31 phase are thermodynamically stable under high pressure and can survive under ambient conditions owing to the synergistic effect of subtle enthalpy differences and high surface energy in nanomaterials.

As in SiO2 which, at high pressures, undergoes the α-quartz → stishovite transition, GaAsO4 transforms into a dirutile structure at 9 GPa and 1173 K. In 2002, a new GaAsO4 polymorph was found by quenching the compound from 6 GPa and 1273 K to ambient conditions. The powder diagram was indexed on the basis of a hexagonal cell (a = 8.2033, c = 4.3941 Å, V = 256.08 Å3), but the structure did not correspond to any known structure of other AXO4 compounds. We report here the ab initio crystal structure determination of this hexagonal polymorph from powder data. The new phase is isostructural to β-MnSb2O6 and it can be described as a lacunary derivative of NiAs with half the octahedral sites being vacant, but it also contains fragments of the rutile-like structure.

A partial wet chemical route has been developed, in which aluminium oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles in a Y(NO3)3 solution are induced to form a core–shell-structured yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) precursor based on a burst nucleation synthesis.

The effect of additives of nanofillers (NF) containing nanoparticles (NP) of copper oxide, stabilized by a polymer matrix of maleized polyethylene (MPE), obtained by the mechanochemical method, on the properties of composites based on isotactic polypropylene (PP) and high-pressure polyethylene (PE) was studied by X-ray phase (XRD) and thermogravimetric (TGA) analyzes. The enhancement of strength, deformation, and rheological parameters, as well as the thermo-oxidative stability of the obtained nanocomposites was revealed, which, apparently, is due to the synergistic effect of the interaction of copper-containing nanoparticles with anhydride groups of MPE. It is shown that nanocomposites based on PP/PE/NF can be processed both by pressing and injection molding and extrusion, which expands the scope of its application.

TiO2-coated granular activated carbon was employed for the removal of toxic microcystin-LR from water. High surface area of the activated carbon provided sites for the adsorption of microcystin-LR, and the adsorbed microcystin-LR migrated continuously onto the surface of TiO2 particles which located mainly at the exterior surface in the vicinity of the entrances of the macropores of the activated carbon. The migrated microcystin-LR was finally degraded into nontoxic products and CO2 very quickly. These combined roles of the activated carbon and TiO2 showed a synergistic effect on the efficient degradation of toxic microcystin-LR. A continuous flow fluidized bed reactor with the TiO2-coated activated carbon could successfully be employed for the efficient photocatalytic of microcystin-LR.

The phase selection of hyper-peritectic Al-47wt.%Ni alloy solidified under different pressures was investigated. The results show that Al3Ni2 and Al3Ni phases coexist at ambient pressure, while another new phase α-Al exists simultaneously when solidified at high pressure. Based on the competitive growth theory of dendrite, a kinetic stabilization of metastable peritectic phases with respect to stable ones is predicted for different solidification pressures. It demonstrates that Al3Ni2 phase nucleates and grows directly from the undercooled liquid. Meanwhile, the Debye temperatures of Al-47wt.%Ni alloy that fabricated at different pressures were also calculated using the low temperature heat capacity curve.
