Background: There has been an increasing curiosity over the past few years to carry out organic reactions over heterogeneous nanocatalysts. Microwave activation coupled with a nanocatalyst along with water as a reaction medium makes the process further green. Microwave activation as a green process reduces reaction times, enhances product purity and improves chemical yield. Methods: Nitrile group chemistry has been explored by many researchers across the globe owing to its interesting properties and its importance in synthetic chemistry. Despite several methods being available for the synthesis of nitriles, microwave assisted synthesis of nitriles using Fe3O4 nanoparticles appears more promising. The present study is intended at developing a recyclable magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles catalyzed protocol towards the synthesis of organonitrile derivatives using one pot reaction. Results: The above protocol incorporates the use of microwave for heating and water as reaction medium. Several substituted nitriles could be synthesized for excellent yields. The magnetite nanoparticles can be reused for new reaction without significant loss in activity. Conclusion: The experiment makes the protocol simple, environment friendly and economically feasible.

ZnSb2O6has been synthesized by a microwave-assisted solution method in order to test its possible application as a gas sensor. Zinc nitrate, antimony trichloride, and ethylenediamine were used as precursors and deionized water as solvent. Microwave radiation, with a power of ~350 W, was applied for solvent evaporation. The thermal decomposition of the precursors leads to the formation of ZnSb2O6at 600°C. This oxide crystallized in a tetragonal structure with cell parametersa=4.66 Å,c=9.26 Å and space groupP42/mnm. Microwires and microrods formed by nanocrystals were observed by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM and TEM, resp.). Pellets of the oxide were tested as gas sensors in flowing atmospheres of carbon monoxide (CO) and propane (C3H8). Sensitivity increased with the gas concentration (0–300 ppm) and working temperatures (ambient, 150 and 250°C) increase. The results indicate high sensitivity of ZnSb2O6in both gases at different concentrations and operating temperatures.

The aim of this study is to determine the levels of yield extract of mangosteen pericarp extracted using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) Central Composite Design (CCD) with various concentrations of ethanol (in the range of 45 to 96 %) and duration of microwave heating (in the range 5.8 to 34.1 o C) or Microwave Assisted Extraction (MAE). The yield extract was calculated as percentage to the weight of origin. The results showed that optimum extraction conditions for yield extract were at ethanol concentration of 70% and heating time of 31.5 minutes which resulted in yield extract of 19.45%. More over, under these conditions resulted yield of 19.83%. The yield extract equation of mangosteen pericarp is Y = -73,7883 + 0,5293 X heating time and X 2 1 + 2,4230 X 2 is ethanol concentration in water as solvent. 0,0084X12 0,00173 X2 2 , where X1 is heating time and X2 is ethanol concentration in water as solvent.Key words : Optimization, Mangosteen, RSM CCD, MAE, yield
