The principles, synthesis strategies of ion imprinting and typical heavy metal ion imprinted polymers (IIPs) are introduced in the review. Finally, it is pointed out that the futures research problems to be solved and the development direction of metal ion imprinting technology.

There is an urgent demand worldwide for the development of highly selective adsorbents and sensors of heavy metal ions and other organic pollutants. Within these environmental and public health frameworks, we are combining the salient features of clays and chelatant polymers to design selective metal ion adsorbents. Towards this end, the ion imprinting approach has been used to develop a novel nanohybrid material for the selective separation of Cu2+ ions in an aqueous solution. The Cu2+-imprinted polymer/montmorillonite (IIP/Mt) and non-imprinted polymer/montmorillonite (NIP/Mt) nanocomposites were prepared by a radical photopolymerization process in visible light. The ion imprinting step was indeed important as the recognition of copper ions by IIP/Mt was significantly superior to that of NIP/Mt, i.e., the reference nanocomposite synthesized in the same way but in the absence of Cu2+ ions. The adsorption process as batch study was investigated under the experimental condition affecting same parameters such as contact time, concentration of metal ions, and pH. The adsorption capacity of Cu2+ ions is maximized at pH 5. Removal of Cu2+ ion achieved equilibrium within 15 min; the results obtained were found to be fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The equilibrium process was well described by the Langmuir isothermal model and the maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 23.6 mg/g. This is the first report on the design of imprinted polymer nanocomposites using Type II radical initiators under visible light in the presence of clay intercalated with hydrogen donor diazonium. The method is original, simple and efficient; it opens up new horizons in the general domain of clay/polymer nanocomposites.

A novel thermoresponsive Cu(II) ion-imprinted hydrogel [Cu(II)-IIH] with interpenetrating network structure has been prepared to remove Cu(II) ions with high selectivity. The Cu(II)-IIH was prepared by free radical/cationic hybrid photopolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and triethylene glycol divinyl ether (DVE-3) using Cu(II) ion as template. The Cu(II)-IIH was used to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solution at 20 and 40oC. The Cu(II)-IIH selectively bound the template ion above a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). The memory was fixed by shrinking above the LCST, and was deleted by swelling below the LCST. Selective adsorption study indicated that ion imprinting resulted in stronger affinity of the Cu(II)-IIH toward Cu(II) ions than other competitor metal ions compared with the non-imprinted hydrogel (NIH).

AbstractA novel ion imprinted polymeric membrane (IIPM) for copper (Cu) ions transport was prepared by a ion imprinting technique via cross-linking of blended chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) using glutaraldehyde (GA) as the cross-linker and Cu ions as the template. The obtained IIPM was characterised and evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and permeation studies. Cavities of IIPM containing recognition sites for Cu ions were formed in the compact structure of the CS/PVA membrane which was prepared via the solution casting method. Under the optimum conditions, transport factor of the IIPM reached 2 when the permeation time was 18 h. Selective permeation of Cu ions versus nickel ions through the imprinted membrane was confirmed and a selectivity factor of 1.71 was obtained.
