The synthesis, characterization, and activity of Pd-doped layered double hydroxides (Pd-LDHs) for for acceptorless amine dehydrogenation is reported. These multifunctional catalysts comprise Brønsted basic and Lewis acidic surface sites that stabilize Pd species in 0, 2+, and 4+ oxidation states. Pd speciation and corresponding cataytic performance is a strong function of metal loading. Excellent activity is observed for the oxidative transamination of primary amines and acceptorless dehydrogenation of secondary amines to secondary imines using a low Pd loading (0.5 mol%), without the need for oxidants. N-heterocycles, such as indoline, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline, and piperidine, are dehydrogenated to the corresponding aromatics with high yields. The relative yields of secondary imines are proportional to the calculated free energy of reaction, while yields for oxidative amination correlate with the electrophilicity of primary imine intermediates. Reversible amine dehydrogenation and imine hydrogenation determine the relative imine:amine selectivity. Poisoning tests evidence that Pd-LDHs operate heterogeneously, with negligible metal leaching; catalysts can be regenerated by acid dissolution and re-precipitation.

AbstractAntimicrobial resistance threatens the viability of modern medicine, which is largely dependent on the successful prevention and treatment of bacterial infections. Unfortunately, there are few new therapeutics in the clinical pipeline, particularly for Gram-negative bacteria. We now present a detailed evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of cannabidiol, the main non-psychoactive component of cannabis. We confirm previous reports of Gram-positive activity and expand the breadth of pathogens tested, including highly resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Clostridioides difficile. Our results demonstrate that cannabidiol has excellent activity against biofilms, little propensity to induce resistance, and topical in vivo efficacy. Multiple mode-of-action studies point to membrane disruption as cannabidiol’s primary mechanism. More importantly, we now report for the first time that cannabidiol can selectively kill a subset of Gram-negative bacteria that includes the ‘urgent threat’ pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Structure-activity relationship studies demonstrate the potential to advance cannabidiol analogs as a much-needed new class of antibiotics.

Photocatalysis has long been touted as one of the most promising technologies for environmental remediation. The ability of photocatalysts to degrade a host of different pollutants, especially recalcitrant molecules, is certainly appealing. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been used extensively for this purpose. Anodic oxidation allows for the synthesis of a highly ordered nanotubular structure with a high degree of tunability. In this study, a series of TiO2 arrays were synthesised using different electrolytes and different potentials. Mixed anatase-rutile photocatalysts with excellent wettability were achieved with all the experimental iterations. Under UVA light, all the materials showed significant photoactivity towards different organic pollutants. The nanotubes synthesised in the ethylene glycol-based electrolyte exhibited the best performance, with near complete degradation of all the pollutants. The antibacterial activity of this same material was similarly high, with extremely low bacterial survival rates. Increasing the voltage resulted in wider and longer nanotubes, characteristics which increase the level of photocatalytic activity. The ease of synthesis coupled with the excellent activity makes this a viable material that can be used in flat-plate reactors and that is suitable for photocatalytic water treatment.
