Self-assembled ionic liquid crystals can transport water and ions via the periodic nanochannels, and these materials are promising candidates as water treatment membranes. Molecular insights on the water transport process are, however, less investigated because of computational difficulties of ionic soft matters and the self-assembly. Here we report specific behavior of water molecules in the nanochannels by using the self-consistent modeling combining density functional theory and molecular dynamics and the large-scale molecular dynamics calculation. The simulations clearly provide the one-dimensional (1D) and 3D-interconnected nanochannels of self-assembled columnar and bicontinuous structures, respectively, with the precise mesoscale order observed by x-ray diffraction measurement. Water molecules are then confined inside the nanochannels with the formation of hydrogen bonding network. The quantitative analyses of free energetics and anisotropic diffusivity reveal that, the mesoscale geometry of 1D nanodomain profits the nature of water transport via advantages of dissolution and diffusion mechanisms inside the ionic nanochannels.

A hydrogen-bonded chloride-hydrate assembly {[(H2O)4Cl2]2−}∞ has been ion-countered by the complex cations [Fe([9]aneS3)2]2+ ([9]aneS3 = 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane). In {[(H2O)4Cl2]2−}∞, four water molecules and two chloride ions are self-assembled to form a one-dimensional supramolecular array of O-H···O and O-H···Cl hydrogen bonding, which consists of fused fourand six-membered rings. The discrete cation [Fe([9]aneS3)2]2+ has a nearly regular octahedral FeS6 core with an average Fe-S bond length of 2.2586(5) Å .

Melting-freezing dynamics of water confined in three MCM-41 materials with pore diameters of 2.0 nm, 2.5 nm and 3.7 nm was analyzed using dielectric spectroscopy method. Obtained results show, that reorientation of water molecules is strongly affected by confinement and interaction with the pore surface, which leads to the formation of highly disordered hydrogen bonded network. Defects of this network play the key role in the overall relaxation of confined water.

In the title hydrated salt, C8H18N+·C4H5O4−·H2O, the cyclooctyl ring of the cation is disordered over two positions in a 0.833 (3):0.167 (3) ratio. The structure contains various O—H.·O and N—H...O interactions, forming a hydrogen-bonded layer of molecules perpendicular to thecaxis. In each layer, the ammonium cation hydrogen bonds to two hydrogen succinate anions and one water molecule. Each hydrogen succinate anion hydrogen bonds to neighbouring anions, forming a chain of molecules along thebaxis. In addition, each hydrogen succinate anion hydrogen bonds to two water molecules and the ammonium cation.
