A convenient synthesis of 1,2-dicyanoferrocene (3) was developed by using 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene as a dehydrating agent for the treatment of 1,2-ferrocenedicarbaldehyde dioxime (2) to give 3 in yields exceeding 80%. Compounds 2 and 3 have been characterized by IR and NMR (1H, 13C{1H}) spectroscopy and by electrochemistry (cyclic voltammetry and square-wave voltammetry). Furthermore, the molecular structures of 2 and 3 in the solid state have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallographic studies.

The determination of clopidogrel, an antiplatelet agent, was performed at a gold electrode in pH 3.7 acetate buffer using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). Each voltammogram is characterized by the well defined peak at approximately 1.0 V. The current of anodic stripping peak exhibits linear dependence on the clopidogrel concentration in a range from 317.89 mg cm-3 to 935.16 mg cm-3. The obtained linearity was applied to determine clopidogrel amount in the tablet form of pharmaceutical preparation (Plavix?). The results were compared to the UV spectrophotometric and HPLC method.

Novel ECPs (electronic conducting polymers) based on amino β-styryl-substituted terthiophene (AST) were synthetized by direct electropolymerization. The ECPs were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, square-wave voltammetry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The poly(amino β-styryl terthiophene) displayed cyclic and square-wave voltammograms with redox peaks that can be assigned to the aminophenyl moiety and the polyterthiophene backbone. The presence of free primary amine groups on the ECP film permitted further biological functionalization (i.e., covalent bonding of various bioreceptors on its surface). The electrochemical performance of Biotin grafted at the AST modified glassy carbon electrode was investigated to detect the Avidin protein in solution by cyclic voltammetry and square-wave voltammetry.Key words: electronic conducting polymer, electrode surface modification, biosensor, β-styryl-substitued terthiophene, functionalization, cyclic, square-wave voltammetry.

Reported here is the design of an electrochemical sensor for dopamine (DA) based on a screen print carbon electrode modified with a sulphonated polyether ether ketone-iron (III) oxide composite (SPCE-Fe3O4/SPEEK). L. serica leaf extract was used in the synthesis of iron (III) oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs). Successful synthesis of Fe3O4NP was confirmed through characterization using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), ultraviolet–visible light (UV–VIS), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to investigate the electrochemical behaviour of Fe3O4/SPEEK in 0.1 M of phosphate buffer solution (PBS) containing 5 mM of potassium ferricyanide (III) solution (K3[Fe(CN)6]). An increase in peak current was observed at the nanocomposite modified electrode SPCE-Fe3O4/SPEEK) but not SPCE and SPCE-Fe3O4, which could be ascribed to the presence of SPEEK. CV and square wave voltammetry (SWV) were employed in the electroxidation of dopamine (0.1 mM DA). The detection limit (LoD) of 7.1 μM and 0.005 μA/μM sensitivity was obtained for DA at the SPCE-Fe3O4/SPEEK electrode with concentrations ranging from 5–50 μM. LOD competes well with other electrodes reported in the literature. The developed sensor demonstrated good practical applicability for DA in a DA injection with good resultant recovery percentages and RSDs values.
