Three-dimensional (3D) BiOBr/BiOI hierarchical microspheres were successfully fabricated on the surface of fly ash cenospheres (FACs) via a facile one-pot solvothermal method for the first time. The as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results indicated that the loaded hierarchical microspheres exhibited a uniform distribution, and some aggregation was observed. These well-dispersed hierarchical microspheres were composed of 2D nanosheets, which possess heterojunction structures. Based on the photodegradation tests examining the removal of rhodamine B from water under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), the photocatalytic activity of BiOB/BiOI/FACs was superior to that of BiOBr/FACs and BiOI/FACs. A proposed mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity displayed by BiOB/BiOI/FACs is discussed.

Abstract Objectives Bile acids serve as biomarkers for liver function and are indicators for cholestatic and hepatobiliary diseases like hepatitis, cirrhosis, and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP). Sulfation and renal excretion of bile acids are important elimination steps. The power of ultra high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) allows specific profiling of primary and secondary bile acids as well as their sulfated counterparts. Methods Twenty-four sulfated and non-sulfated primary and secondary bile acids were quantified in urine with 15 corresponding stable isotope labeled internal standards by using two-dimensional UHPLC-MS/MS. The sample preparation was based on a simple dilution with a methanolic zinc sulfate solution followed by an automated online solid phase extraction clean up. Results The validation results of the method fulfilled the criteria of the European Medicine Agency (EMA) “Guideline on bioanalytical method validation”. To verify fitness for purpose, 40 urine samples were analyzed which showed an average of 86% sulfation, 9.1% taurine-conjugation, 14% non-conjugation, and 77% glycine-conjugation rates. Conclusions Lossless one-pot sample preparation, automated sample purification, and high number of internal standards are major innovations of the presented profiling method, which may allow diagnostic application of BA profiling in the future.

This paper deals with two topics concerning two-dimensional automata operating in parallel. We first investigate a relationship between the accepting powers of two-dimensional alternating finite automata (2-AFAs) and nondeterministic bottom-up pyramid cellular acceptors (NUPCAs), and show that Ω ( diameter × log diameter ) time is necessary for NUPCAs to simulate 2-AFAs. We then investigate space complexity of two-dimensional alternating Turing machines (2-ATMs) operating in small space, and show that if L (n) is a two-dimensionally space-constructible function such that lim n → ∞ L (n)/ loglog n > 1 and L (n) ≤ log n, and L′ (n) is a function satisfying L′ (n) =o (L(n)), then there exists a set accepted by some strongly L (n) space-bounded two-dimensional deterministic Turing machine, but not accepted by any weakly L′ (n) space-bounded 2-ATM, and thus there exists a rich space hierarchy for weakly S (n) space-bounded 2-ATMs with loglog n ≤ S (n) ≤ log n.
