Liquid marbles are liquid drops made non-wetting by the use of a powder which coats them. Because of the absence of a contact line, quick motions without leakage of small amounts of liquid are allowed, which can be of interest in microfluidic applications. After characterizing the static liquid marble, we focus on its properties and study experimentally the viscous motion of liquid marbles. Then, we describe qualitatively possible ways for putting marbles into motion and quantify the robustness of this object.

Application of electrochemical methods for micro repair is being researched. A liquid marble is a liquid droplet coated with hydrophobic micro or nano powders. When the liquid used is a suitable electrolyte, it can be used for localized electrochemical deposition (LECD) which is in turn used for micro repair. Though the feasibility of this process is already established, the properties of the deposit with respect to the metal substrate has to be studied. Corrosion is an important property that can vary between two metals. An immersion corrosion test is performed on a substrates having micro spots made using LECD using 5% NaCl for 240 hours. The results are compared with specimens of the same dimension which underwent the same corrosion testing process. It was found that the micro deposits did not affect the corrosion rate significantly and therefore localized electro deposition using liquid marbles may be considered as a potential method for micro repair.

The need for miniaturised reaction systems has led to the development of various microreactor platforms, such as droplet-based microreactors. However, these microreactors possess inherent drawbacks, such as rapid evaporation and difficult handling, that limit their use in practical applications. Liquid marbles are droplets covered with hydrophobic particles and are a potential platform that can overcome the weaknesses of bare droplets. The coating particles completely isolate the interior liquids from the surrounding environment, thus conveniently encapsulating the reactions. Great efforts have been made over the past decade to demonstrate the feasibility of liquid marble-based microreactors for chemical and biological applications. This review systemically summarises state-of-the-art implementations of liquid marbles as microreactors. This paper also discusses the various aspects of liquid marble-based microreactors, such as the formation, manipulation, and future perspectives.
