ABSTRACTThe delayed fluorescence of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) and poly(p-phenylene ethynylene) (PPE) derivative solids and frozen solutions at 20 K is described. It provides strong evidence for triplet-triplet annihilation to singlets excitons accounting for up to ∼3% of the total emission in PPV films and ∼1.5% in PPE powder. It also yields triplet lifetimes of 70 and 110 μs in PPV films and frozen solutions, and ∼200 and ∼500 μs in PPE powder and frozen solutions, respectively.

AbstractA series of poly(phenylene-vinylene)-based copolymers are synthesized using the Gilch method incorporating monomers with sterically bulky sidechains. The photochemical upconversion performance of these polymers as emitters are investigated using a palladium tetraphenyltetrabenzoporphyrin triplet sensitizer and MEH-PPV as reference. Increased incorporation of sterically bulky monomers leads to a reduction in the upconversion efficiency despite improved photoluminescence quantum yield. A phosphorescence quenching study indicates issues with the energy transfer process between the triplet sensitizer and the copolymers. The best performance with 0.18% upconversion quantum yield is obtained for the copolymer containing 10% monomer with bulky sidechains.

In this article, we review the possibility of combining conjugated polymers with nanometer-scale devices (nanodevices), in order to introduce the properties associated with conjugated polymers into such nanodevices. This approach envisages combining the highly topical disciplines of polymer electronics and nanoelectronics to engender a new subdirection of polymer nanoelectronics, which can serve as a tool to probe the behavior of polymer molecules at the nanometer/molecular level, and contribute to clarifying transport mechanisms in conjugated polymers. In this study, we exemplify this combination, using a family of linear and conjugated polymers, poly(p-phenylene-ethynylene)s (PPEs) with thiolacetate-functionalized end groups.
