Anogeissus pendula Edgew has been reported to be used in gastric disorder even though no attempt has been made to evaluate the same. The present study was designed to evaluate the hydroalcoholic extracts of stem bark and leaves for in vivo acute antiulcer and anti-inflammatory activities. Antiulcer activity was studied by pylorus ligation induced ulcers while anti-inflammatory activities was studied by carrageenan induced paw edema. The extract of stem bark at 200 and 400 mg/kg b. w., significantly (P<0.05) reduced ulcer index whereas extracts of both stem bark and leaves significantly (P<0.001) reduced paw diameter at the fifth hour. The hydroalcholic extract of stem bark of A. pendula possesses more significant antiulcer and anti-inflammatory activity than the hydroalcholic extract of leaves may be due to the presence of higher amount of phenolic compounds.

Propolis is a resin manufactured by bees through the mixture of plant exudates and waxes with secreted substances from their metabolism, resulting in a complex mixture of natural substances of which quality depends on the phytogeographic and climatic conditions around the hive. The present study investigated the contribution of phenolic compounds to the cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory activities of propolis. The phenolic composition was evaluated by liquid chromatography with diode-array detection coupled to electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC/DAD/ESI-MSn) analysis after phenolic extraction. The cytotoxicity of the extracts was checked using human tumor cell lines (MCF7- breast adenocarcinoma, NCI-H460- non-small cell lung carcinoma, HeLa- cervical carcinoma, HepG2- hepatocellular carcinoma, and MM127- malignant melanoma), as well as non-tumor cells (a porcine liver primary culture-PLP2). The anti-inflammatory activity was assessed using the murine macrophage (RAW 264.7) cell line. The results showed a composition rich in phenolic acids, such as caffeic and p-coumaric acid, as well as flavonoids, such as pinocembrin, pinobanksin, and pinobanksin-3-O-butyrate. Samples MP2 from Sefrou and MP3 from Moulay Yaâcoub presented a high concentration in phenolic compounds, while MP1 and MP4 from Boulemane and Immouzzer Mermoucha, respectively, showed similar composition with low bioactivity. The higher concentration of phenolic compound derivatives, which seems to be the most cytotoxic phenolic class, can explain the pronounced antitumor and anti-inflammatory activity observed for sample MP2.

All over the world, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are taken annually by about three hundred million people and this figure is constantly increasing. At the same time, NSAIDs are also one of the most common causes of side effects of drug therapy. The development and implementation of new anti-inflammatory drugs, including those of plant origin, with minimal side effects is an urgent task of modern pharmaceutical science. Vaccinium corymbosum L. (family Ericaceae), which is gaining more and more popularity among berry crops and is successfully cultivated in Ukraine, is promising in this direction for research. The aim: phytochemical analysis of dry extracts from blueberry leaves to establish the possibility of creating new drugs with anti-inflammatory activity. Materials and methods. The objects of the study were dry extracts of northern highbush blueberry leaves. The content of amino acids and phenolic compounds was determined by HPLC and spectrophotometry. The prototypal activity was studied in vivo and in vitro. Research results. 4 dry extracts were obtained from northern highbush blueberry leaves. In the extracts obtained by HPLC, 7 amino acids were identified, including 3 essential ones: arginine, histidine, and phenylalanine. As a result of the HPLC study, 7 phenolic compounds were identified in extracts from the leaves of northern highbush blueberry: 5 flavonoids - rutin, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, kaempferol-3-O-glucoside, quercetin and kaempferol and 2 hydroxycinnamic acids, chlorogenic and caffeic acid. For the first time, the anti-inflammatory effect of extracts from blueberry leaves was investigated. It was revealed that extract 1 at a dose of 50 mg/kg and extract 4 modified with arginine at a dose of 25 mg/kg have the highest anti-inflammatory activity. Conclusions. The results of the conducted studies indicate that extracts from the leaves of northern highbush blueberry in terms of the content of biologically active substances are promising sources for the creation of new drugs and dietary supplements with anti-inflammatory activity
