The magnetic behavior of rare-earth orthoferrite ErFeO3 single crystal can be controlled by low magnetic fields from a few to hundreds of Oe. Here we investigated high-quality ErFeO3 single crystal...

Single crystals of the laser host material Sc2SiO5 as well as thulium- (4 at.-%) and ytterbium- (5 at.-%) doped samples were prepared by the Czochralski technique. The structures of Sc2SiO5, Tm3+:Sc2SiO5, and Yb3+:Sc2SiO5 were refined on the basis of high-quality single-crystal X-ray diffraction data: monoclinic Y2SiO5 type, space group C2/c. The X-ray data unambiguously show that the larger rare earth cations exclusively occupy the 8 f site with oxygen coordination number 7.

High-field magnetization studies performed at 4.2 K in magnetic fields up to 38 T on amorphous Fe80−xHoxB20 alloys have revealed, for samples with the stoichiometry close to that of a compensated ferrimagnet, a magnetic transition. Such a transition is not trivial in systems with a sperimagnetic structure, due to the random local anisotropy, for which a continuous and gradual approach to saturation is expected. The occurrence of the transition can rather be understood within a model of two magnetic sublattices. Under action of high magnetic fields a non-collinear magnetic structure of the rare-earth and Fe sublattices is realized. A similar behaviour has been observed for Co80−xErxB20 and Fe80−xGdxB20 alloys. From the non-collinear regime, the exchange interactions between the 3d and rare-earth magnetic sublattices have been accurately evaluated and they are found to be close to that observed in crystalline compounds.
