ABSTRACTUnderstanding the interaction of water with biological materials is of fundamental importance. One of main driving forces behind the renewed activity of biomimetic materials involves the dramatic physical properties that many of them exhibit. Two main factors that are critical for understanding silks: the nanoscale semi-crystalline folding structure, and the degree of hydration of the disordered fraction. We describe our investigation of the preparation, characterization and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies of the microscopic dynamics of natural Bombyx mori silk fibroin proteins derived from silkworm cocoons. An in situ quartz microbalance is used for monitoring/controlling the hydration and solvent levels of the proteins electrospun onto neutron sample holders. By employing these novel methods our INS investigation facilitated a snapshot of the microscopic silk protein dynamics heretofore not investigated or reported. Preliminary INS measurements illustrate the effect of water and methanol interaction on the dynamics of the fibroin β-pleated sheet component. Evidence of what appears to be a water component (intersheet) distinct from bulk water is clearly apparent in the INS spectrum when the dynamical response from the dry silk is subtracted away.

In Situ Neutron Diffraction

The efficient removal of alkyne impurities for the production of polymer-grade lower olefins remains an important and challenging goal for many industries. We report a strategy to control the pore interior of faujasite (FAU) zeolites by the confinement of isolated open nickel(II) sites in their six-membered rings. Under ambient conditions, Ni@FAU showed remarkable adsorption of alkynes and efficient separations of acetylene/ethylene, propyne/propylene, and butyne/1,3-butadiene mixtures, with unprecedented dynamic separation selectivities of 100, 92, and 83, respectively. In situ neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering revealed that confined nickel(II) sites enabled chemoselective and reversible binding to acetylene through the formation of metastable [Ni(II)(C2H2)3] complexes. Control of the chemistry of pore interiors of easily scalable zeolites has unlocked their potential in challenging industrial separations.

A single-crystal sapphire cell for performing neutron-scattering experiments on gas hydrates synthesized in situ was designed and fabricated to operate at pressures up to 350 bar (1 bar = 105 Pa) and temperatures between 10 and 300 K. The single-crystal cell is cut off-axis from the c-axis of sapphire to avoid Bragg diffraction in the scattering plane for the Debye–Scherrer geometry. The cell is pressurized from a boosted pumping station via a small-diameter stainless-steel pipe. The cell is cylindrical with no external supports. The design of the cell allows the unobstructed detection of neutrons scattered from the sample. This requirement necessitated a departure from the predominant style of sapphire cells reported in the literature. Several iterations of design modifications and finite-element modeling were performed prior to building the prototype. The cell was tested hydrostatically at room temperature. Preliminary inelastic neutron scattering data are reported to verify the performance of the cell. PACS No.: 61.12ex
