A general, consistent with linear irreversible thermodynamics, theory of stress and elastic deformation during interdiffusion is shown. Special consideration is given to the entropy balance and its production rate during diffusion in Cu-Fe-Ni alloys. The entropy produced during diffusion does not depend on the reference frame and is always positive. The paper spans the gap between the Darken method, linear irreversible thermodynamics and treatments by Stephenson and Svoboda.

We study space–time thermodynamics for nonequilibrium processes. We first generalize the formulation of space–time thermodynamics by using an observer outside the horizon. Then we construct the entropy balance equation of space–time thermodynamics for nonequilibrium processes in f(R) gravity. The coefficients of the expansion and shear terms are equal to the viscosities of the black hole membrane paradigm, and a new entropy production term appears.

A quasi-gasdynamic system of equations with a mass force and a heat source is well known in the case of the perfect polytropic gas. In the paper, the system is extended to the case of general equations of gas state satisfying thermodynamic stability conditions. The entropy balance equation is studied. The validity of the non-negativity property is algebraically analyzed for the entropy production. Two different forms are derived for its relaxation summands. It is proved that under a condition on the heat source intensity, the non-negativity property is valid.
