Domain walls (DWs) are singularities in an ordered medium that often host exotic phenomena such as charge ordering, insulator-metal transition, or superconductivity. The ability to locally write and erase DWs is highly desirable, as it allows one to design material functionality by patterning DWs in specific configurations. We demonstrate such capability at room temperature in a charge density wave (CDW), a macroscopic condensate of electrons and phonons, in ultrathin 1T-TaS2. A single femtosecond light pulse is shown to locally inject or remove mirror DWs in the CDW condensate, with probabilities tunable by pulse energy and temperature. Using time-resolved electron diffraction, we are able to simultaneously track anti-synchronized CDW amplitude oscillations from both the lattice and the condensate, where photoinjected DWs lead to a red-shifted frequency. Our demonstration of reversible DW manipulation may pave new ways for engineering correlated material systems with light.

Iron ludwigite exhibits a superstructure between 283 and 144 K. Anomalies in its transport properties are due to a structural transition related to a charge-ordering phenomenon in the low-dimensional structure. This ordering produces a commensurate transversal charge density wave in the system. To understand these structural characteristics, an X-ray single-crystal diffraction study has been performed at 300 and 15 K. No changes were found in the crystalline structure, except for contraction of the cell volume. The bond-valence sum for each cation shows that at room temperature each Fe4—Fe2—Fe4 triad is composed of three Fe3+ions with one extra electron per triad, and at 15 K in each Fe4a—Fe2—Fe4btriad the extra electron is accommodated in the Fe4a—Fe2 pair of each triad.

AbstractA comparative study of the dielectric properties and electric polarization of multiferroics GdMn_2O_5 and Gd_0.8Ce_0.2MnO_5 has been carried out in the temperature range 5–330 K. The polarization properties in the ferroelectric state that forms due to a charge ordering and exchange striction have been studied at T ≤ T _C = 30 K. The properties of the restricted polar phase separation domains formed in the crystals containing ions Mn^3+ and Mn^4+ have been studied, too. These domains exhibit the electric polarization in the temperature range from 5 K to some temperatures T _f ≫ T _C. Such a high-temperature polarization is due to the frozen superparaelectric state of the restricted polar domains.

ABSTRACTElectrical conduction properties of charge ordering type ferroelectrics YFe2O4 were investigated. YFe2O4 was synthesized in reduced atmosphere at 1200 °C. Oxygen partial pressure of the reduced atmosphere was controlled by the equilibrium state of CO and CO2. YFe2O4 is paramagnetic at room temperature and has Néel temperature around 250K. The Néel temperature was decreased with increasing the amount of oxygen deficiency. Moreover, YFe2O4 showed ohmic conduction from 260 to 100 K. The temperature dependence of the DC conductivity showed an inflection point at the Néel temperature, which indicated the development of charge ordering of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions. From the complex impedance measurements, the equivalent circuits of YFe2O4 with different oxygen deficiency were determined at various temperatures.

A ceramics sample of LiTaO3 was prepared using a sol-gel method. The sample is annealed at 750 °C for 48 hours. X-ray diffraction analysis indicate the formation of single phase, rhombohedral structure. An ac impedance study was used to analyse the conductivity of LiTaO3 at room temperature and at various temperatures.

To induce fine engineered domain configurations into potassium niobate (KNbO3) single crystals, two kinds of methods were performed, i.e., (1) high DC electric field exposure along the opposite direction of polarization of KNbO3 single-domain crystals at room temperature, and (2) introduction of randomly oriented fine domain configuration by heat treatment at 700 °C and then high DC electric field exposure along [001]c direction of KNbO3 multidomain crystals at room temperature. When the method (1) was performed, finally, the poled KNbO3 crystals became to single-domain state again through the formation of multidomain state. On the other hand, the KNbO3 multidomain crystals were obtained by using the method (2), and an enhancement of piezoelectric-related properties was observed.

ABSTRACTThe synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of monoclinic Nb12O29 are described. The synthesis of a pure bulk sample is difficult due to the large number of other similar phases. It is achieved by rapid reduction of H-Nb2O5 with Nb metal. The compound is shown to undergo a charge ordering transition at low temperature which provokes long range magnetic order in an intriguing one dimensional arrangement.
