Understanding of light-emitting diode lamp behaviour is essential to support the use of these devices as illumination sources in near infrared spectroscopy. Spectral variation in light-emitting diode peak output (680, 700, 720, 735, 760, 780, 850, 880 and 940 nm) was assessed over time from power up and with variation in environmental temperature. Initial light-emitting diode power up to full intensity occurred within a measurement cycle (12 ms), then intensity decreased exponentially over approximately 6 min, a result ascribed to an increase in junction temperature as current is passed through the light-emitting diode. Some light-emitting diodes displayed start-up output characteristics on their first use, indicating the need for a short light-emitting diode ‘burn in’ period, which was less than 24 h in all cases. Increasing the ambient temperature produced a logarithmic decrease in overall intensity of the light-emitting diodes and a linear shift to longer wavelength of the peak emission. This behaviour is consistent with the observed decrease in the IAD Index (absorbance difference between 670 nm and 720 nm, A670–A720) with increased ambient temperature, as measured by an instrument utilising light-emitting diode illumination (DA Meter). Instruments using light-emitting diodes should be designed to avoid or accommodate the effect of temperature. If accommodating temperature, as light-emitting diode manufacturer specifications are broad, characterisation is recommended.

Perovskite-based light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) have emerged as a promising alternative owning to the excellent optoelectronic properties including narrow emission linewidths, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), tunable emission wavelength, and high color purity. Over the past several years, significant progress has been obtained for green, red, and near-infrared PLEDs with a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of over 20%. However, the development of blue PLEDs has been limited by several technical issues including poor film quality, inefficient device structure, higher trap density, and so on. To overcome these drawbacks with improved PLQY and EQE, we summarize and analyze the recent advances towards the development of three dimensional (3D), two dimensional (2D) and quasi-2D perovskites film employing composition and/or dimensional engineering. Moreover, the utilization of perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) is also considered as a feasible strategy for the realization of high-performance blue PLEDs. We systematically evaluate the performance of sky-blue, pure-blue and deep blue PLEDs based on different perovskite materials. Finally, future prospective are proposed to promote the development of efficient blue PLEDs.

Multi-spectral imaging (MSI) has made diagnosis of microscopic samples considerably easier and information abound. Most MSI systems use continuum light sources and filters for imaging purposes. However, these light sources and filters are relatively expensive, unstable due to extreme pressure and temperature and associated with prolong acquisition time. In this work, we present a metallurgical microscope retrofitted with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as illumination sources for MSI microscopy. This multispectral LED imaging microscope (MSLEDIM) is relatively cheaper and capable of acquiring images in reflection, transmission and scattering modes at thirteen (13) different wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet to near infrared. The microscope has been demonstrated in biomedical and entomological research fields. The MSLEDIM can be used in various scientific research fields for imaging microscopic samples.
