The influence of alkyl chain length of cations on cellulose solubility in a neat imidazolium (MIM)-based ionic liquid (IL) [CnMIM][OAc] and [CnMIM][OAc]–DMSO binary system (n=0–6) was investigated. The correlation between cellulose solubility and Kamlet–Taft hydrogen bond basicity (β) was also examined. Cellulose solubility (g per mol IL) in neat [CnMIM][OAc] increased as the cation alkyl chain length decreased from 6 to 2. However, alkyl chain lengths of 1 and 0 resulted in extremely poor cellulose solubility, indicating that a chain length of 2 was optimal for dissolution of cellulose in the system. Cellulose solubility in the [CnMIM][OAc]–DMSO binary system (n=1–6) was greater than that in neat IL, with maximum solubility occurring at an IL mole fraction of ~0.2. Maximum cellulose solubility in the [CnMIM][OAc]–DMSO binary system was slightly better at even alkyl chain lengths (n=2, 4, or 6) than at odd chain lengths (n=1, 3, or 5), with the best solubility at n=4. More interestingly, maximum cellulose solubility and specific IL mole fraction in the IL-DMSO binary system were related with the β values of neat ILs, even with ILs containing different anionic species or cation alkyl chain lengths. This indicates that solubility information in IL-DMSO binary systems is influenced by the characteristics of neat ILs.

As a promising electrochromic material, viologens have attracted increasing attention due to their high redox activity and adjustable electrochromic capability. In order to investigate the effect of alkyl substituents on electrochromic behavior, four alkyl-substituted viologens and a benzyl-substituted viologen were synthesized, namely 1,1′-dioctyl-4,4′-bipyridinium dibromide (OV), 1,1′-didekyl-4,4′-bipyridinium dibromide (DeV), 1,1′-didodecyl-4,4′-bipyridinium dibromide (DoV), 1,1′-dihexadecyl-4,4′-bipyridinium dibromide (HV), and 1,1′-dibenzyl-4,4′-bipyridinium dibromide (BV). The different photophysical and electrochemical properties of these viologens were attributed to their deviation in spatial structure caused by different substituents. Compared with benzyl-substituted BV, a slight blueshift occurred for the absorption peaks of alkyl-substituted viologens from 262 to 257 nm with the increase in alkyl chain length. Moreover, the first redox couple increased positively, and the dimerization of the compound decreased gradually, accompanied by the decrease in optical contrast and distinct chromatic difference. A comparison of chromatic and optical contrasts indicated that OV had the longest coloring response time (RTc), while it was shortest for HV. The bleaching response time (RTb) of viologen films gradually decreased with the alkyl chain length, and the OV film had the shortest RTb. Furthermore, when increasing the length of the alkyl chain, the cycling stabilities of alkyl viologens increased gradually. In addition, the OV film exhibited the best contrast after 200 continuous cycles.

Zinc selenide (ZnSe) nanocrystals were synthesized via a phosphine-free route using the highly reactive alkylamine-H2Se complex as selenium precursor and zinc precursors with different reactivity. The reactivity of zinc precursor was tuned by using three kinds of zinc carboxylates with different alkyl chain lengths, including zinc acetate, zinc nonanoate, and zinc stearate. The effect of the reactivity and the amount of zinc precursor on nucleation and growth of ZnSe nanocrystals were investigated by ultraviolet-visible absorption and photoluminescence spectra. Result indicates that the growth and optical property of the resulting ZnSe nanocrystals are strongly dependent on the alkyl chain length and the amount of the zinc carboxylates and both shorter alkyl chain length, and more amount of zinc carboxylate will lead to faster growth of ZnSe nanocrystals. This allows that the controlled growth and excellent optical property of high-quality ZnSe nanocrystals can be achieved by combining the different reactivity and the used amount of zinc precursor, such as by using stoichiometric and reactive Zn precursor and Se precursor or by using larger amount of more unreactive Zn precursor relative to the highly reactive alkylamine-H2Se complex precursor.
