A stereoselective synthesis of the dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan core of the natural product schisandrene is described. Starting from readily available gallic acid, the synthetic strategy involves Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling, Stille reaction, and ring-closing metathesis (RCM) in the reaction sequence. The required asymmetric center at C-7′ was established by an asymmetric reduction of a keto compound using the Corey–Bakshi–Shibata (CBS) catalyst. In our approach, the eight-membered ring was achieved by RCM for the first time.

Sala (Salacca edulis, a hybrid between S. wallichiana and S. glabrescens) is extensively cultivated in Southeast Asia for its highly valued fruit (1). During the rainy season in 1999, a fruit rot of sala caused by Thielaviopsis paradoxa (2) was observed to occur on immature and mature fruits for the first time in Trad and Chantaburi provinces, Thailand. Infected fruit discolored brown to black and appeared rotted with white mycelia on the lesions. Fruit eventually abscised. Conidiophores of the fungus were usually straight and hyaline to pale brown. The conidia (8.75 to 12.5 × 3.75 to 5.5 μm) were cylindrical to elliptical and also hyaline to pale brown. The brown, smooth, and ovate chlamydospores (15 to 25 × 8.7 to 14.5 μm) were borne terminally in chains from short hyphal branches. To fulfill Koch's postulates, six isolates of the fungus were grown on potato-dextrose agar for 7 days. Plugs of mycelia agar (0.5 cm in diameter) from each isolate were inoculated onto fresh fruit (four fruit per isolate) after the surface was disinfected with 10% sodium hypochlorite for 3 min. Non-inoculated fruits with sterile distilled water were served as controls. After incubation at 30°C and 80% RH in a humidity chamber for 4 days, lesions occurred on all the inoculated fruit. The fungus was subsequently recovered from the lesions. One isolate has been deposited in the Fungal Culture Collection, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology, Ladkrabang, Thailand (TF 1-6/1999). A convenient synthetic strategy is reported for the series of complexes [Ir(pp)3]3+ (where pp = phen, Me2phen and Me4phen) through the intermediacy of the appropriate [Ir(pp)2(CF3SO3)2]+ species. In the case of [Ir(phen)3]3+, the cation was resolved into its enantiomeric forms, for which the absolute configurations were determined by X-ray diffraction. The availability for the first time of the CD spectra allowed comparison with computed CD spectra. Measurement of the antimicrobial activity of the [Ir(pp)3]3+ species {and the [Ir(pp)2X2]+ (X = Cl–, CF3SO3–) precursors involved in their synthesis}, as well as cell uptake studies with the four bacterial strains S. aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), E. coli, and P. aeruginosa, indicated that they showed little activity compared with their Ru(ii) analogues. The results suggest that it is unfavourable for an individual metal centre with a 3+ charge to pass across the bacterial cell membrane.

Therapeutic success in endodontic treatment depends on successful infection control. Alexidine dihydrochloride (ALX) was recently proposed as a potential alternative to 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) as it possesses similar antimicrobial properties, expresses substantivity and does not produce p-chloroaniline (PCA) when mixed with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). However, the products released in this reaction have not been described to date. The aim of this study was to identify detected chemical compounds formed in the reaction of ALX and NaOCl with the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrophotometry (UHPLC-MS) method and assess whether precipitates and PCA are formed in this reaction. Solutions of ALX were mixed with the equivalent volume of 2% and 5.25% (w/v) NaOCl solutions. As control, 2% (w/v) CHX was mixed with 2% and 5.25% (w/v) NaOCl. Samples were subjected to the UHPLC-MS analysis. The mixture of ALX and NaOCl resulted in a yellowish precipitate formation, the amount of which depended on NaOCl concentration. Interaction of ALX and NaOCl resulted in the production of aliphatic amines. No PCA was formed when NaOCl was mixed with ALX. However, for the first time, we identified the possible products of the interaction. The interaction between NaOCl and ALX results in the formation of aliphatic amines; therefore, these compounds should not be mixed during endodontic treatment.

An efficient solid-phase synthesis approach is here reported for the first time to prepare the EGFR inhibitor Gefitinib. The five-step synthetic strategy used FMP resin as the solid support, and FTIR and colorimetric assays were used to track the reaction’s progress. Gefitinib was obtained with an overall yield of 40%.

The purpose of disinfectants is to reduce microorganisms on a contaminated surface and to prevent the spread of microorganisms. The relatively new EN 16615 simulates disinfection by wiping and allows for assessing the recovery of microorganisms from the surface and, importantly, the degree of spread of microorganisms when the surface is disinfected by wiping. For the first time, using this standard, the tested products in the form of commercial disinfectant wipes were compared with self-made wipes soaked in respective disinfectant liquids. The disinfected surfaces were simulated by homogeneous polyvinyl chloride plates. The studies were carried out not only with the standard, but also with clinical multidrug-resistant microbial strains. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the most effective products in the disinfection process (log10 reduction of ≥5) with the shortest contact time (1 min) were products containing ethanol, propanol, and quaternary ammonium compounds (self-made wipes) and propanol (commercial wipes). The least effective products (log10 reduction of <5) in terms of the contact time declared by the manufacturer were products containing ethanol and sodium hypochlorite (commercial wipes). Much better antimicrobial activity of self-made wipes was observed in comparison to the activity of the commercial wipes.
