The paper is focused on a theoretical analysis of the function of continuous flow mixer with the so-called gamma-distribution of fluid residence times, used as a linear filter smoothing undesirable fluctuations of input properties. A relation is derived expressing the degree of smoothing of the signal passing through the system, as a function of statistical parameters of this signal and of gamma-distribution of fluid-residence times in the mixer. The analysis of this relation leads to conclusions concerning the prediction of the operation of smoothing mixers or the design of their basic parameters.

An unprecedented two-step sequence was designed by combining batch and continuous flow (CF) protocols for the upgrading of two aminodiol regioisomers derived from glycerol, i.e., 3-amino-1,2-propanediol and 2-amino-1,3-propanediol (serinol). Under batch conditions, at 80–90 °C, both substrates were quantitatively converted into the corresponding amides through a catalyst-free N-acetylation reaction mediated by an innocuous enol ester as isopropenyl acetate (iPAc). Thereafter, at 30–100 °C and 1–10 atm, the amide derivatives underwent a selective CF-acetalisation in the presence of acetone and a solid acid catalyst, to afford the double-functionalized (amide-acetal) products.

The effect of continuous-flow microwave treatment at high temperatures on the retention of vitamins B1 and B6 in raw milk with different fat content was evaluated. Results were compared with those obtained using a conventional system (tubular heat exchanger) with the same heating and cooling phases. Heat treatment of whole (3.4% fat) and skim (0.5% fat) milk at 90°C produced no losses of vitamin B1 or vitamin B6 (pyridoxamine and pyridoxal). However, at 110 and 120°C, while vitamin B1 content of milk remained constant, pyridoxamine increased (4 to 5% and 9 to 11%, respectively) and pyridoxal decreased (5 to 6% and 9 to 12%, respectively). Under the assayed conditions, no differences were observed between the content of these vitamins in conventionally and continuous-flow microwave-treated milk.
