In this paper, the chlorinated poly (vinyl-chloride) (CPVC) nanofiber were successfully prepared via electrospinning of the proper spinning solution, which was obtained by dissolving CPVC granules in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) mixture. The results indicates that the morphology of the fibers is influenced by solution concentration and applied voltage. The finer and uniform nanofiber is electrospun from total solid content of the spinning solutions at 16wt.% and the spinning voltage at 26kV. The surface potential of CPVC nanofiber nonwovens increases with the spinning voltage and the filtration efficiency increases firstly and then decreases. In spinning voltage of 26 kV, filtration efficiency reaches a maximum of 99.925%.

The degradation of filtration performance for corona-charged electret filter media exposed to ethyl benzene was assessed. Nonwoven corona-charged polypropylene fiber mats were exposed to ethyl-benzene using a custom made apparatus. Evaluated scenarios included ethyl-benzene vapor and liquid exposures. The filtration performance was evaluated using DOP as a test aerosol to measure filtration performance. It was observed that significant filtration degradation occurred only when liquid ethyl benzene came into direct contact with the filter media. No significant changes in the pressure drop or filtration efficiency was observed for any of the exposure scenarios in which the fibers were only exposed to ethyl benzene in the vapor phase.

Electret melt-blown nonwovens are widely used for air purification due to their low pressure drop and high filtration efficiency. However, the charge stability could be affected by the ambient temperature and humidity, reducing the filtration efficiency, resulting in the electret melt blown filter not providing effective protection. Herein, we used corona charge to prepare electret melt-blown nonwovens and systematically studied the effects of different temperature and humidity on the structure, morphology, filtration performance, and surface potential within 24 h. The effect of treatment temperature and humidity on pressure drop was minimal because the fiber morphology and web structure of melt-blown nonwovens were not damaged. When the treatment temperature was lower than 70 °C, the effect on the filtration efficiency of the sample was small, but when the temperature increased to 90 or 110 °C, the filtration efficiency decreased significantly with the increase of the treatment time, and the surface potential also declined similarly. In conclusion, high temperatures will lead to charge escape and reduce the electrostatic adsorption effect. Furthermore, at the same temperature, increasing relative humidity can accelerate the charge release and make the filtration efficiency drop more. After the sample was treated at 110 °C and 90% relative humidity for 24 h, the filtration efficiency decreased from 95.49% to 38.16% at a flow rate of 14.16 cm s−1, and the surface potential dropped to the lowest value of −1.01 kV. This result shows that all links of electret melt-blown filter material from raw material to final use should be avoided in high temperature and high humidity conditions to ensure the protection effect.

Electret filter composed of permanently charged electret fibers is a good material for environmental protection. A novel kind of electret melt-blown nonwovens (EMNs) doped with nano-tourmaline was developed by corona charging in this paper. The structure of web, mechanical properties, surface charge density and filtration efficiency of samples were discussed. The results showed that the structure of EMNs became loose and the initial surface charge density was increased markedly. Furthermore, the EMNs exhibited higher filtration efficiency and lower pressure drop, especially the content of nano-tourmaline was about 6 wt. %.

Electron microdiffraction patterns, obtained when a small electron probe with diameter of 10-15 Å is directed to run parallel to and outside a flat crystal surface, are sensitive to the surface nature of the crystals. Dynamical diffraction calculations have shown that most of the experimental observations for a flat (100) face of a MgO crystal, such as the streaking of the central spot in the surface normal direction and (100)-type forbidden reflections etc., could be explained satisfactorily by assuming a modified image potential field outside the crystal surface. However the origin of this extended surface potential remains uncertain. A theoretical analysis by Howie et al suggests that the surface image potential should have a form different from above-mentioned image potential and also be smaller by several orders of magnitude. Nevertheless the surface potential distribution may in practice be modified in various ways, such as by the adsorption of a monolayer of gas molecules.
