Given the rise in demand for sustainable renewable biofuels and promising developments in cellulosic ethanol, the valorization of lignin has become essential for biorefining operations, especially with today’s low-cost energy production state of affairs. In the past 40 years, numerous efforts have been devoted to incorporate lignin and lignin derivatives into commercial polymeric materials. One of the promising strategies is to utilize multifunctional lignin macromolecules or oligomers as the replacement of polyols during polyurethane synthesis. In this review, recent advances in fabricating polyurethane foams, films, and adhesives with modified or unmodified lignins are examined. The mechanical and thermal properties of these lignin-based polyurethanes were correlated to their formulations, lignin molecular weight, and polydispersity, as well as the structural features of different lignin preparations. Recalcitrance and strong intermolecular interactions of lignin macromolecules are known to prevent them from effective incorporation into other polymeric materials, covalently or noncovalently. Therefore, this review intends to summarize the methods that improve the reactivity of lignin through chemical modification such as depolymerization, demethylation, and chain extension. Future developments and applications will be examined with a special emphasis on tailoring lignin structure to specific applications.

Personal Perspectives

The development of nanogenerators (NGs) with optimal performances and functionalities requires more novel materials. Over the past decade, biopolymer nanofibers (BPNFs) have become critical sustainable building blocks in energy-related fields because they have distinctive nanostructures and properties and can be obtained from abundant and renewable resources. This review summarizes recent advances in the use of BPNFs for NG development. We will begin by introducing various strategies for fabricating BPNFs with diverse structures and performances. Then, we will systematically present the utilization of polysaccharide and protein nanofibers for NGs. We will mainly focus on the use of BPNFs to generate bulk materials with tailored structures and properties for assembling of triboelectric and piezoelectric NGs. The use of BPNFs to construct NGs for the generation of electricity from moisture and osmosis is also discussed. Finally, we illustrate our personal perspectives on several issues that require special attention with regard to future developments in this active field.

Nitrogen-containing heterocycles are one of the most common structural motifs in approximately 80% of the marketed drugs. Of these, benzimidazoles analogues are known to elicit a wide spectrum of pharmaceutical activities such as anticancer, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antiviral, antifungal as well as chemosensor effect. Based on the benzimidazole core fused heterocyclic compounds, crescent-shaped bisbenzimidazoles were developed which provided an early breakthrough in the sequence-specific DNA recognition. Over the years, a number of functional variations in the bisbenzimidazole core have led to the emergence of their unique properties and established them as versatile ligands against several classes of pathogens. The present review provides an overview of diverse pharmacological activities of the bisbenzimidazole analogues in the past decade with a brief account of its development through the years.

Poly(α-hydroxy acids), as a family of biodegradable polyesters, are valuable materials due to their broad applications in packaging, agriculture, and biomedical engineering. Herein we highlight and explore recent advances of catalysts in controlled ring-opening polymerization of O-carboxyanhydrides towards functionalized poly(α-hydroxy acids), especially metal catalyst-mediated controlled polymerization. Limitations of current polymerization strategies of O-carboxyanhydrides are discussed.

While dam models with discrete inputs are analogous to queueing processes, the essentially continuous nature of water inflows has distinguished generalized storage processes from queues. It does not seem possible we are beginning year IV of PREP. Those who have been with us since the beginning will recall that the Pediatrics Review in Education Program, PREP, is designed as a six-year cycle. Each year objectives are developed by panels of pediatricians drawn from practice and teaching for two areas: Recent Advances of importance to the general pediatrician and Topics for Annual Review. Recent Advances cover the entire field of pediatrics, but are limited to information developed in the past six years; Topics are limited to a cluster area with no time limitation. For the 1982/83 Year, the Topics for Annual Review include community health, school health, accidents, poisoning and trauma, athletics and physical fitness, learning disabilities and school adjustment problems, adolescent medicine, delinquency, and drug abuse.

Over the years, Nigerian researchers in environmental engineering and chemistry have been evaluating a variety of technologies for the remediation of petroleum industry polluted surface and groundwater. In this mini-review, the recent advances in this regard over the past two years were evaluated. This was done as an appraisal of research efforts to understand the current research trend and gain a proper perspective of the required/needed future approach in the research area. It was observed that most studies are still focusing on evaluating the problems instead of finding actual solutions. Development of workable and novel solutions are urgently needed. It can be in the form of better remediation techniques or via the development of alternative technologies for utilizing the waste/pollutant materials. The paper has given a clear opinion on the progress of environmental protection and sustainability in the Nigerian context. The environmental regulations scenario in the country is marred by malpractices and corruption more stringent policy enforcement will help in the achievement of environmental protection.
