A mixture of a nitro- and methoxy-substituted azo-containing phospholipids without long alkyl tails formed vesicles showing visible light stimuli-responsive behavior. Release of encapsulated calcein from the vesicles was triggered by visible light.

Photonic crystal structures were fabricated by the formation of periodic arrays of poly(ferrocenylsilane) (PFS) derivations and silica spheres. Here, we present the primary steps of a simulation-driven design of photonic crystal based on PFS as a potentially stimuli-responsive polymer, which can present predesigned color when subjected to the visible light. The poly(ferrocenylmethylvinylsilane) (PFMVS) was synthesized by photolytic anionic ring opening polymerization of methylvinylsila[1]ferrocenophane monomer under controlled condition and monodisperse silica spheres were synthesized by the Stober process. Bare silica opal was prepared by the convective self-assembly process of different sizes of silica spheres on glass substrate followed by infiltration of PFMVS to obtain PFMVS/silica opal and finally removal of the silica spheres by acid washing to attain the inverse PFMVS opal. The particle size of silica spheres along with the refractive indices contrast of different components forming photonic crystal played an important role in obtaining the maximum reflectance wavelength of the desired opal. Photonic crystal prepared by 210, 270, and 330 nm monodisperse silica spheres represents the blue, green, and red color, respectively. Simulation analyses of these opal structures were investigated by using the plane-wave expansion (PWE) method to assess the photonic crystal behavior versus the visible light. According to the simulation results, the photonic crystal structure was designed. The experimental reflectance outcomes of the three opal structures were in good agreement with the simulation analysis.

Membrane technologies are essential for water treatment, bioprocessing and chemical manufacturing. Stimuli-responsive membranes respond to changes in feed conditions (e.g., temperature, pH) or external stimuli (e.g., magnetic field, light) with a change in performance parameters (permeability, selectivity). This enables new functionalities such as tunable performance, self-cleaning and smart-valve behavior. Polymer self-assembly is a crucial tool for manufacturing such membranes using scalable methods, enabling easier commercialization. This review surveys approaches to impart stimuli responsive behavior to membrane filters using polymer self-assembly.

The involvement of metal ions within the self-assembly spontaneously occurring in surfactant-based systems gives additional and interesting features. The electronic states of the metal, together with the bonds that can be established with the organic amphiphilic counterpart, are the factors triggering new photophysical properties. Moreover, the availability of stimuli-responsive supramolecular amphiphile assemblies, able to disassemble in a back-process, provides reversible switching particularly useful in novel approaches and applications giving rise to truly smart materials. In particular, small amphiphiles with an inner distribution, within their molecular architecture, of various polar and apolar functional groups, can give a wide variety of interactions and therefore enriched self-assemblies. If it is joined with the opportune presence and localization of noble metals, whose chemical and photophysical properties are undiscussed, then very interesting materials can be obtained. In this minireview, the basic concepts on self-assembly of small amphiphilic molecules with noble metals are shown with particular reference to the photophysical properties aiming at furnishing to the reader a panoramic view of these exciting problematics. In this respect, the following will be shown: (i) the principles of self-assembly of amphiphiles that involve noble metals, (ii) examples of amphiphiles and amphiphile-noble metal systems as representatives of systems with enhanced photophysical properties, and (iii) final comments and perspectives with some examples of modern applications.

The self-organization properties of a stimuli responsive amphiphile can be altered by subjecting the paramagnetic oxidized form to a magnetic field of 0.8 T and monitored in real time by coupling optical birefringence with dynamic light scattering.
