Pharmaceuticals and pesticides are emerging contaminants problematic in the aquatic environment because of their adverse effects on aquatic life and humans. In order to remove them from water, photocatalysis is one of the most modern technologies to be used. First, newly synthesized photocatalysts were successfully prepared using a sol–gel method and characterized by different techniques (XRD, FTIR, UV/Vis, BET and SEM/EDX). The photocatalytic properties of TiO2, ZnO and MgO nanoparticles were examined according to their removal from water for two antibiotics (ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone) and two herbicides (tembotrione and fluroxypyr) exposed to UV/simulated sunlight (SS). TiO2 proved to be the most efficient nanopowder under UV and SS. Addition of (NH4)2S2O8 led to the faster removal of both antibiotics and herbicide fluroxypyr. The main intermediates were separated and identified for the herbicides and antibiotic ciprofloxacin. Finally, the toxicity of each emerging pollutant mixture and formed intermediates was assessed on wheat germination and biomass production.

Emerging contaminants (ECs) represent a wide range of compounds, whose complete elimination from wastewaters by conventional methods is not always guaranteed, posing human and environmental risks. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), based on the generation of highly oxidizing species, lead to the degradation of these ECs. In this context, TiO2 and ZnO are the most widely used inorganic photocatalysts, mainly due to their low cost and wide availability. The addition of small amounts of nanoclusters may imply enhanced light absorption and an attenuation effect on the recombination rate of electron/hole pairs, resulting in improved photocatalytic activity. In this work, we propose the use of silver nanoclusters deposited on ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO–Ag), with a view to evaluating their catalytic activity under both ultraviolet A (UVA) and visible light, in order to reduce energetic requirements in prospective applications on a larger scale. The catalysts were produced and then characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). As proof of concept of the capacity of photocatalysts doped with nanoclusters, experiments were carried out to remove the azo dye Orange II (OII). The results demonstrated the high photocatalytic efficiency achieved thanks to the incorporation of nanoclusters, especially evident in the experiments performed under white light.

The feasibility of treating water contaminated by two toxic organic compounds with an ultraviolet light catalyzed oxidation process using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant is investigated. In this process hydrogen peroxide is decomposed by ultraviolet radiation producing hydroxyl radicals. The hydroxyl radicals will then oxidize organic compounds via a complex chain of radical reactions. Tests showed that this photooxidation process could successfully remove isophorone and dimethyl phthalate from contaminated waters. A reaction rate expression which adequately describes the process was developed. The reaction rate was found to be first order with respect to hydrogen peroxide concentration, zero order with respect to organic concentration and a function of ultraviolet radiation intensity. The reaction did not exhibit autocatalytic characteristics.

MIIZnAl-LDH/ZnS QD (MII = Co or Mn) nanocomposites were synthesized by assembling oppositely charged 2D LDH layers and ZnS QDs. The MIIZnAl-LDH/ZnS QDs exhibited enhanced visible light harvesting ability, considerable visible light photocatalytic activity and photostability.
