AbstractCarbon nanotubes (CNT) are interesting candidates for the reinforcement in robust composites and for conducting fillers in polymers due to their fascinating electronic and mechanical properties. For the first time, we report the incorporation of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) into silica-glass surfaces by means of partial surface-melting caused by a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser. MWNTs were detected being well incorporated in the silica-surface. The composites are characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman-spectroscopy. A model for the composite-formation is proposed based on heatabsorption by MWNTs and a partial melting of the silica-surface.

The Relationship

Recent studies reveal that carbon nanostructures show anomalous piezoelectric properties when the central symmetry of their structure is violated. Particular focus is given to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with initial significant curvature of the graphene sheet surface, which leads to an asymmetric redistribution of the electron density. This paper presents the results of studies on the piezoelectric properties of aligned multi-walled CNTs. An original technique for evaluating the effective piezoelectric coefficient of CNTs is presented. For the first time, in this study, we investigate the influence of the growth temperature and thickness of the catalytic Ni layer on the value of the piezoelectric coefficient of CNTs. We establish the relationship between the effective piezoelectric coefficient of CNTs and their defectiveness and diameter, which determines the curvature of the graphene sheet surface. The calculated values of the effective piezoelectric coefficient of CNTs are shown to be between 0.019 and 0.413 C/m2, depending on the degree of their defectiveness and diameter.

The extensive production of polymer composites reinforced by carbon nanotube is limited by the absence of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods capable of assessing product quality to guarantee compliance with specifications. It is well known that the level of dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the polymer matrix is the parameter that, much more than others, can influence their enhancement capabilities. Here an active Infrared Thermography Non Destructive Testing(IR-NDT) inspection, joined with pulsed phase thermography (PPT), were applied for the first time to epoxy-CNT composites to evaluate the level of dispersion of the nanoparticles. The PPT approach was tested on three groups of epoxy nanocomposite samples with different levels of dispersion of the nanoparticles. The phasegrams obtained with the presented technique clearly show clusters, or bundles, of CNTs when present, so a comparison with the reference sample is not necessary to evaluate the quality of the dispersion. Therefore, the new NDE approach can be applied to verify that the expected dispersion levels are met in products made from epoxy and Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs). The mechanisms underlying the effects of the dispersion of carbon nanotube on the thermal response of polymer composites have been identified.

The Relationship

In this paper, the relationship between mechanical strength and void characteristics including porosity, the mean area of voids (MAV), and circularity was determined for the first time by analyzing the petrographic images of some cement mortars containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The results showed that the compressive, tensile, and flexural strength for specimens containing 0.1% MWCNTs (optimum dosage of MWCNT) were 21, 12.5, and 9.5% more than that of the control samples, respectively. Also, it was shown that the application of MWCNTs can change the shape and the amount of voids, thereby imposing a significant impact on the mortar behavior. For the optimum dosage of MWCNTs, the porosity and MAV decreased about 63 and 71%, respectively, while the circularity enhanced 23% in comparison with the ordinary mortar samples. The void shape is one of the reasons for the enhanced properties of the MWCNT mortars. The image processing of the petrographic specimens and probability theorization revealed that the circularity of the voids had a significant impact on the flexural strength of the mortars, while the compressive strength was mostly affected by only the amount of porosity.
