Heating a gas to over 1,000°C with concentrated sunlight can enable advanced high-performance applications such as solar-driven combined cycles and solar thermo-chemical processes. Solar receivers using volumetric porous absorbers are intended to produce the ‘volumetric effect’ leading to reduced heat loss and high absorber efficiency. However, experiments on volumetric absorbers have not shown this effect, and the absorbers’ efficiency is usually in the range of 70–80% rather than the desirable range of over 90%. Several porous structure geometries, including the well-known ceramic honeycomb and ceramic foam, were investigated with a numerical model. The results show that even optimal configurations still fall short of the desired range of absorber efficiency. A new candidate structure, a dense wire mesh, was investigated and compared to the conventional absorbers. The volumetric convection coefficient was also measured experimentally to provide validation of the single report found in the literature for this structure. An attractive solution with high efficiency of 90% was found for a dense wire mesh with pore diameter of 1 mm and porosity of 0.83. This geometry seems then a promising candidate for future volumetric absorbers.

Abstract InGaN-based blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs), with their high efficiency and brightness, are entering the display industry. However, a significant gap remains between the expectation of highly efficient light sources and their experimental realization into tiny pixels for ultrahigh-density displays for augmented reality (AR).Herein, we report using tailored ion implantation (TIIP) to fabricate highly-efficient, electrically-driven pixelated InGaN microLEDs (µLEDs) at the mid-submicron scale (line/space of 0.5/0.5 µm), corresponding to 8500ppi (RGB). Creating a laterally confined nonradiative region around each pixel with controlled amount of mobile vacancies, TIIP pixelation materializes relatively invariant luminance, and high pixel distinctiveness, at submicron-sized pixels. Moreover, with incomparable integration capability of TIIP pixelation owing to its planar geometry, we demonstrate 2000 ppi µLED displays with monolithically integrated thin-film transistor pixel circuits, and 5000 ppi compatible core technologies. We expect that the demonstrated method will pave the way toward high-performance µLED displays for seamless AR glasses in the near future.

Background: Ferruginol (FRGN) exhibits a broad range of pharmacological properties which make it a promising candidate for chemoprevention. However, little is known about its absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) properties. Methods: A rapid, sensitive and specific HPLC-DAD method was established to quantify FRGN in the plasma and tissues of Wistar rats. After extraction of FRGN with ethyl acetate (EtOAc), chromatographic separation was performed on a YMC ODS C18 column (250 × 4.6 mm I.D., 5 µm) with a mobile phase consisting of methanol-water (92:8, v/v) at a flow rate of 0.9 mL/min. Detection was conducted with a wavelength of 273 nm at 25 °C. Results: The calibration curves for FRGN were linear in the concentration range of 0.5-20 µg/mL for plasma, 0.5-10 µg/mL for heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, stomach, intestine, brain and muscle. After three cycles of freezing and thawing, the concentration variations were within ± 7% of nominal concentrations, indicating no significant substance loss during repeated thawing and freezing. The assay was applied to pharmacokinetic and tissue distribution study in rats. Results suggested that lung, heart, liver, spleen and kidney were the major distribution tissues of FRGN in rats, and FRGN could permeate the blood-brain barrier to distribute in the brain of rats. Conclusion: The information provided by this research is very useful for gaining knowledge of the pharmacokinetic process and tissue distribution of FRGN.

In this work, an experiment was carried out to investigate the preparation condition of anisotropic, Fe-deficient, M-type Sr ferrite with optimum magnetic and physical properties by changing experimental parameters, such as the La substitution amount and little additive modification during fine milling process. The compositions of the calcined ferrites were chosen according to the stoichiometry LaxSr1-xFe12-2xO19, where M-type single-phase calcined powder was synthesized with a composition of x = 0.30. The effect of CaCO3, SiO2, and Co3O4 inter-additives on the Sr ferrite was also discussed in order to obtain low-temperature sintered magnets. The magnetic properties of Br = 4608 Gauss, bHc = 3650 Oe, iHc = 3765 Oe, and (BH)max = 5.23 MGOe were obtained for Sr ferrite hard magnets with low cobalt content at 1.7 wt%, which will eventually be used as high-end permanent magnets for the high-efficiency motor application in automobiles with Br > 4600 ± 50 G and iHc > 3600 ± 50 Oe.

Cities and nations worldwide are pledging to energy and carbon neutral objectives that imply a huge contribution from buildings. High-performance targets, either zero energy or zero carbon, are typically difficult to be reached by single buildings, but groups of properly-managed buildings might reach these ambitious goals. For this purpose we need tools and experiences to model, monitor, manage and optimize buildings and their neighborhood-level systems. The paper describes the activities pursued for the deployment of an advanced energy management system for a multi-carrier energy grid of an existing neighborhood in the area of Milan. The activities included: (i) development of a detailed monitoring plan, (ii) deployment of the monitoring plan, (iii) development of a virtual model of the neighborhood and simulation of the energy performance. Comparisons against early-stage energy monitoring data proved promising and the generation system showed high efficiency (EER equal to 5.84), to be further exploited.

Perovskite-based electronic materials and devices such as perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have notoriously bad reproducibility, which greatly impedes both fundamental understanding of their intrinsic properties and real-world applications. Here, we report that organic iodide perovskite precursors can be oxidized to I2 even for carefully sealed precursor powders or solutions, which markedly deteriorates the performance and reproducibility of PSCs. Adding benzylhydrazine hydrochloride (BHC) as a reductant into degraded precursor solutions can effectively reduce the detrimental I2 back to I−, accompanied by a substantial reduction of I3−-induced charge traps in the films. BHC residuals in perovskite films further stabilize the PSCs under operation conditions. BHC improves the stabilized efficiency of the blade-coated p-i-n structure PSCs to a record value of 23.2% (22.62 ± 0.40% certified by National Renewable Energy Laboratory), and the high-efficiency devices have a very high yield. A stabilized aperture efficiency of 18.2% is also achieved on a 35.8-cm2 mini-module.

AbstractNonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved breakthrough with pushing the efficiency exceeding 17%. While this shed light on OSC commercialization, high-performance flexible OSCs should be pursued through solution manufacturing. Herein, we report a solution-processed flexible OSC based on a transparent conducting PEDOT:PSS anode doped with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (CF3SO3H). Through a low-concentration and low-temperature CF3SO3H doping, the conducting polymer anodes exhibited a main sheet resistance of 35 Ω sq−1 (minimum value: 32 Ω sq−1), a raised work function (≈ 5.0 eV), a superior wettability, and a high electrical stability. The high work function minimized the energy level mismatch among the anodes, hole-transporting layers and electron-donors of the active layers, thereby leading to an enhanced carrier extraction. The solution-processed flexible OSCs yielded a record-high efficiency of 16.41% (maximum value: 16.61%). Besides, the flexible OSCs afforded the 1000 cyclic bending tests at the radius of 1.5 mm and the long-time thermal treatments at 85 °C, demonstrating a high flexibility and a good thermal stability.
