Approximately ten years ago the first experiments were performed in which the Auger electrons produced after inner-shell ionisation of atoms by electron impact were detected in coincidence with the scattered electrons. Only a limited number of such experiments have been performed since that time, mainly due to the very low count rates characteristic of these measurements. Recent developments in the field are discussed and the future prospects for such measurements are considered.


At this second Discussion Meeting on NMR imaging, we have seen a broad range of imaging and spectroscopic activities from imaging of solids, microscopic imaging, high-speed imaging and spectroscopic imaging. It has been 11 years since the first Discussion Meeting, and the object at this meeting was to review the recent developments and consider the future prospects. We have all been amazed by the developments in solid imaging and the quality and resolution that can now be achieved by combining line narrowing methods with gradient pulsing or with gradient modulation. The future for solid imaging with its wide potential is assured. Progress in free radical imaging using proton-electron double resonance was also briefly reviewed. Detection of natural levels of free radicals in biological tissue is some way off, but the progress with this technique is impressive.

This paper, which was presented at an Ordinary Meeting of the Institute held in London on 19 November 1980 with the President in the Chair, first outlines the arguments for simulators for use in training and research. The technical problems encountered in simulating ship behaviour are discussed, and the various engineering approaches which have been used for actual simulator construction are described. An account is given of experience to date with ship simulators in the UK, and the future prospects for marine application of simulator methods are discussed.

With the rapid development of global industry and increasingly frequent product circulation, the separation and detection of chiral drugs/pesticides are becoming increasingly important. The chiral nature of substances can result in harm to the human body, and the selective endocrine-disrupting effect of drug enantiomers is caused by differential enantiospecific binding to receptors. This review is devoted to the specific recognition and resolution of chiral molecules by chromatography and membrane-based enantioseparation techniques. Chromatographic enantiomer separations with chiral stationary phase (CSP)-based columns and membrane-based enantiomer filtration are detailed. In addition, the unique properties of these chiral resolution methods have been summarized for practical applications in the chemistry, environment, biology, medicine, and food industries. We further discussed the recognition mechanism in analytical enantioseparations and analyzed recent developments and future prospects of chromatographic and membrane-based enantioseparations.

The transit system serving Greater Vancouver has high ridership and a high rate of growth. Using as a base the well-designed, well-patronized trolleybus grid in the City of Vancouver, an inter-connected suburban bus network has been created, with radial, cross-radial, and local routes meeting on a timed connection basis at suburban shopping centres and other foci. Planners' thoughts for the future include greater emphasis on the micro and macro aspects of land use and relations to transit; the use of capital intensive modes for heavy trunk routes; and the use of various forms of para-transit for low-density and certain feeder applications.

Herein, recent developments in the 3D printing of materials with structural hierarchy and their future prospects are reviewed. It is shown that increasing the extent of ordering, is essential to access novel properties and functionalities.
