InterDigitated Capacitive (IDC) sensor arrays are fabricated with conventional microelectronics-micromachining technologies on quartz substrates. After fabrication, a polymeric well is patterned around each IDC to precisely define the sensing area and thus deposit coatings of various polymers, by drop casting, in a reproducible and controlled manner. The gas sensing performance of the IDC array is presented for humidity and p-xylene.

Submicrochains composed of massage ball-like WO3@CuWO4 have been prepared via a simple Cu2+ intercalation method. WO3@CuWO4 submicrochains sensors displayed excellent sensing performance to CO gas at room temperature.

ZnO nanostructures were synthesized for ethanol and nitrogen dioxide gas-sensing applications. Results pointed out that the defect levels dominating the gas-sensing performance but not the morphology, specific surface area or crystal size.

In the last two decades, GaN nanostructures of various forms like nanowires (NWs), nanotubes (NTs), nanofibers (NFs), nanoparticles (NPs) and nanonetworks (NNs) have been reported for gas sensing applications. In this paper, we have reviewed our group’s work and the works published by other groups on the advances in GaN nanostructures-based sensors for detection of gases such as hydrogen (H2), alcohols (R-OH), methane (CH4), benzene and its derivatives, nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur-dioxide (SO2), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The important sensing performance parameters like limit of detection, response/recovery time and operating temperature for different type of sensors have been summarized and tabulated to provide a thorough performance comparison. A novel metric, the product of response time and limit of detection, has been established, to quantify and compare the overall sensing performance of GaN nanostructure-based devices reported so far. According to this metric, it was found that the InGaN/GaN NW-based sensor exhibits superior overall sensing performance for H2 gas sensing, whereas the GaN/(TiO2–Pt) nanowire-nanoclusters (NWNCs)-based sensor is better for ethanol sensing. The GaN/TiO2 NWNC-based sensor is also well suited for TNT sensing. This paper has also reviewed density-functional theory (DFT)-based first principle studies on the interaction between gas molecules and GaN. The implementation of machine learning algorithms on GaN nanostructured sensors and sensor array has been analyzed as well. Finally, gas sensing mechanism on GaN nanostructure-based sensors at room temperature has been discussed.

In this paper we describe the fabrication steps and the implementation of a planar type gas sensing applications with suspended structure, which presents very low power consumption. Simulations with the finite element model tool show homogeneous temperature distribution across the sensitive film. The device attached with a spin-coated thin layer of SnO2 showed a reasonable sensing performance to hydrogen.

Graphene is a key material for gas sensing applications owing to its high specific surface area and vast chemical modification potential. To fully utilize the potential of graphene, a sensing platform independent of conductive properties is required. In this study, we employed membrane-type surface stress sensors (MSS)—A kind of nanomechanical sensor operated in the static mode—As a sensing platform and utilized graphene oxide (GO) as a gas sensing material. MSS detect surface stress caused by gas sorption; therefore, chemically modified graphene with low conductivity can be utilized as a gas sensing material. We evaluated the sensing performance of a GO-coated MSS by measuring its responses to five gases. We demonstrated with the GO-coated MSS the feasibility of GO as a gas sensing material for static mode nanomechanical sensors and revealed its high selectivity to water vapor. Moreover, we investigated the sensing mechanism of the GO-coated MSS by comparing it with the sensing performance of MSS coated with reduced graphene oxide and graphite powder and deduced key factors for sensitivity and selectivity. Considering the high sensitivity of the GO-coated MSS and the compact measurement system that MSS can realize, the present study provides a new perspective on the sensing applications of graphene.
