Linear potential sweep (LPS) voltammetry was applied to study the kinetics of hydrogen evolution in solutions containing glycolic, malic, tartaric, and gluconic acids. The CE mechanism of hydrogen evolution was analyzed invoking the 2nd Fick's law equations supplemented by terms that account for chemical interactions between diffusing particles. Acids are considered as components that are capable of releasing hydrated protons taking part in the charge-transfer step. Current peaks observed on LPS voltammograms are in linear dependence onν(νis the potential sweep rate). They obey well-known relationships obtained for simple redox processes, provided that the concentration of oxidant is treated as total concentration of proton donors. Determination of surface concentrations as current density functions makes it possible to transform LPS voltammograms into linear Tafel plots normalized with respect to the surface concentration of hydronium ions. Similar kinetic parameters (α≈0.6andi0≈10 μA cm−2) obtained at pH 3 for all OA solutions indicate that the nature of OA has no noticeable influence on the charge-transfer process.

Controlling electronic properties via band structure engineering is at the heart of modern semiconductor devices. Here, we extend this concept to semimetals where, using LuSb as a model system, we show that quantum confinement lifts carrier compensation and differentially affects the mobility of the electron and hole-like carriers resulting in a strong modification in its large, nonsaturating magnetoresistance behavior. Bonding mismatch at the heteroepitaxial interface of a semimetal (LuSb) and a semiconductor (GaSb) leads to the emergence of a two-dimensional, interfacial hole gas. This is accompanied by a charge transfer across the interface that provides another avenue to modify the electronic structure and magnetotransport properties in the ultrathin limit. Our work lays out a general strategy of using confined thin-film geometries and heteroepitaxial interfaces to engineer electronic structure in semimetallic systems, which allows control over their magnetoresistance behavior and simultaneously provides insights into its origin.

In this paper, we study the kinetics of potassium adsorption on SrTiO 3(100) surface at room temperature. The study took place in UHV using AES, EELS, LEED, TPD, and WF measurements. Potassium grows in two-dimensional islands with maximum coverage of 3.9 × 1014 at/cm2. During adsorption charge transfer from the K -4s to Ti -3d energy level has been observed. No K – O compound has been measured. After heating at 1050 K most of the adsorbed potassium desorbs and the SrTiO 3(100) (1 × 1) LEED pattern reappears. There is not any indication of potassium intercalation into the substrate, either at room or at elevated temperature.
