AbstractWe investigated the nucleation of Ga droplets on singular GaAs(111)A substrates in the view of their use as the seeds for the self-assembled droplet epitaxial quantum dots. A small critical cluster size of 1–2 atoms characterizes the droplet nucleation. Low values of the Hopkins-Skellam index (as low as 0.35) demonstrate a high degree of a spatial order of the droplet ensemble. Around $$350\,^{\circ }\hbox {C}$$ 350 ∘ C the droplet size distribution becomes bimodal. We attribute this observation to the interplay between the local environment and the limitation to the adatom surface diffusion introduced by the Ehrlich–Schwöbel barrier at the terrace edges.

The cation of methyl green carriea two poaitive charges, that of malachite green only one; but the two dyes behave towards tissue-constituents in almost exactly the same way. These dyes are not specific for chromatin. They colour certain objects that are devoid of DNA, even when they are used in very dilute solution. The granules of cells called Körnchenzellen in the connective tissue of the common snail, Helix aspersa, are strongly coloured by both dyes from very dilute solutions, and thus provide a striking instance of the unspecificity of these dyes. Malachite green, which is stable and free from contamination by metachromstic impurities, can advantageously replace the methyl green commonly used in mixtures with pyronine. It is suggested that pyronine may have a greater capacity for penetrating into close-textured objects, such ss nucleoli and ribosomes, than methyl and malachite greens.

The formation of complex structures in thin films is of interest in many fields. Segregation of polymer chains of different molecular weights is a well-known process. However, here, polystyrene with bimodal molecular weight distribution, but no additional chemical modification was used. It was proven that at certain conditions, the phase separation occurred between two fractions of bimodal polystyrene/methyl ethyl ketone solution. The films were prepared by spin-coating, and the segregation between polystyrene phases was investigated by force spectroscopy. Next, water vapour induced secondary phase separation was investigated. The introduction of moist airflow induced the self-assembly of the lower molecular weight into islands and the heavier fraction into a honeycomb. As a result, an easy, fast, and effective method of obtaining island/honeycomb morphologies was demonstrated. The possible mechanisms of the formation of such structures were discussed.
