Rational design and development of the electrodes with high-mass loading yet maintaining the excellent electrochemical properties are significant for a variety of electrochemical energy storage applications. In comparison with the slurry-casted electrode, herein, a hierarchically porous activated carbon (HPAC) electrode with higher mass loading (8.3 ± 0.2 mg/cm2) is successfully prepared. The pouch-type symmetric device (1 cell) with the propylene carbonate-based electrolyte shows the rate capability (7.1 F at 1 mA/cm2 and 4.8 F at 10 mA/cm2) and the cycling stability (83% at 12,000 cycles). On the other hand, an initial discharge capacitance of 32.4 F and the capacitance retention of 96% after 30,000 cycles are delivered from a pouch-type symmetric supercapacitor (five cells). The corresponding electrochemical performances are attributed to the fascinating properties of the HPAC and the synergistic features of the resulting electrode.

The complex solubilities of AgCl, AgBr, and AgI have been measured in several mixed solvents containing propylene carbonate and bis(trifluoroethyl)sulfite. The results indicate that a large inductive effect destabilizes the solvation of silver ions whereas the halide ions appear to be stabilized by coordination with the sulfinyl sulfur. Several physio-chemical properties of pure bis(trifluoroethyl)sulfite are reported.

A series of single-metal carbonates and Pb-Zn mixed-metal carbonates were prepared as catalysts for alcoholysis of urea with 1,2-propylene glycol (PG) for the synthesis of propylene carbonate (PC). The mixed carbonates all show much better catalytic activities than the single carbonates, arising from a strong synergistic effect between the two crystalline phases, hydrozincite and lead carbonate. The mixed carbonate with Pb/Zn=1:2 gives the highest yield of PC, followed by the mixed carbonate with Pb/Zn=1:3. Furthermore, Taguchi method was used to optimize the synthetic process for improving the yield of PC. It is shown that the reaction temperature is the most significant factor affecting the yield of PC, followed by the reaction time, and that the optimal reaction conditions are the reaction time at 5 hours, the reaction temperature at 180 oC and the catalyst amount at 1.8 wt%, resulting in the highest PC yield of 96.3%.
