Square planar Pt(ii) terpyridine complexes with pincer ligands undergo two-electron oxidation and variation in the ligand substituents allows for tuning of the two-electron oxidation process over a 260 mV range.

Potential Applications

Pincer complexes can act as catalysts in organic transformations and have potential applications in materials, medicine and biology. They exhibit robust structures and high thermal stability attributed to the tridentate coordination of the pincer ligands and the strong σ metal–carbon bond. Nickel derivatives of these ligands have shown high catalytic activities in cross-coupling reactions and other industrially relevant transformations. This work reports the crystal structures of two polymorphs of the title NiIIPOCOP pincer complex, [Ni(C29H41N2O8P2)Cl] or [NiCl{C6H2-4-[OCOC6H4-3,5-(NO2)2]-2,6-(OPtBu2)2}]. Both pincer structures exhibit the NiIIatom in a distorted square-planar coordination geometry with the POCOP pincer ligand coordinated in a typical tridentate mannerviathe two P atoms and one arene C atomviaa C—Ni σ bond, giving rise to two five-membered chelate rings. The coordination sphere of the NiIIcentre is completed by a chloride ligand. The asymmetric units of both polymorphs consist of one molecule of the pincer complex. In the first polymorph, the arene rings are nearly coplanar, with a dihedral angle between the mean planes of 27.9 (1)°, while in the second polymorph, this angle is 82.64 (1)°, which shows that the arene rings are almost perpendicular to one another. The supramolecular structure is directed by the presence of weak C—H...O=X(X= C or N) interactions, forming two- and three-dimensional chain arrangements.

Recently, the increased use of antibiotics in the environment has been studied and one of them is amoxicillin. Amoxicillin (AMX) is a pharmaceutical product that can become waste due to the continuous use and released into the ecosystem even at low concentrations. The electro-oxidation process is one of the electrochemical methods used to destruct the existence of antibiotics because the process is relatively fast and inexpensive. Platinum electrode and platinum modified cobalt electrodes are used for amoxicillin electro-oxidation at the pH of 2 - 7. The range of this amoxicillin's pH was achieved by the pKa's values of the amoxicillin and measured using a UV/Vis spectrophotometer. Electron transfer during the amoxicillin electro-oxidation process with these electrodes is measured by linear sweep voltammetry. The results obtained during the electro-oxidation process showed that electron transfer of amoxicillin was 1, with a Nernstian factor of 0.0521 V/pH for platinum electrode and platinum modified cobalt electrodes, Pt/Co(OH)2 and Pt/Co respectively with values of 0.0506 V/pH and 0.0673 V/pH.

In the current manuscript, we describe the reactivity of a series of iridium(III) pincer complexes with the general formulae [(PEP)IrCl(CO)(H)]n (n = +1, +2) towards base, where PEP is a pincer-type ligand with different central donor groups, and E is the ligating atom of this group (E = B, C, N). The donor groups encompass a secondary amine, a phosphine-stabilised borylene and a protonated carbodiphosphorane. As all ligating atoms E exhibit an E–H bond, we addressed the question of wether the coordinated donor group can be deprotonated in competition to the reductive elimination of HCl from the iridium(III) centre. Based on experimental and quantum chemical investigations, it is shown that the ability for deprotonation of the coordinated ligand decreases in the order of (R3P)2CH+ > R2NH > (R3P)2BH. The initial product of the reductive elimination of HCl from [(PBP)IrCl(CO)(H)]n (1c), the square planar iridium(I) complex, [(PBP)Ir(CO)]+ (3c), was found to be unstable and further reacts to [(PBP)Ir(CO)2]+ (5c). Comparing the C–O stretching vibrations of the latter with those of related complexes, it is demonstrated that neutral ligands based on tricoordinate boron are very strong donors.
